Editorial Reviews

(1963) Cameron Mitchell, Giorgio Ardisson, directed by Mario Bava. WIDESCREEN. After defeating the Vikings in a long war, the Queen of England raises a Viking child, Eric. Little does she know that his brother is a fierce Viking warrior. Soon the two peoples clash again, bringing the brothers face to face in a pitched battle. As usual, this fine Bava epic has some absolutely fabulous cinematography. From a beautiful color 35mm cinemascope print.

4.0 out of 5 stars better than I expected, and worth watching October 14, 2011

"The Invaders" A.K.A. "Erik The Conqueror" is a 1961 film with Cameron Mitchell (High Chaparral; Alias Smith and Jones; Hawkins; Swiss Family Robinson; etc TV series), Alice Kessler and Ellen Kessler, George Ardisson, and many others it seems like you should know. Meant to span between 786 A.D. to 820 A.D. as an epic tale of war between Britain and Viking raiders. Two Viking brothers are separated early in their youth, and raised in opposing countries as royalty, which includes leading an army against each other. Filmed in Italy and France, this DVD version is in English but has been over-dubbed in French, Italian, and German when shown in whichever respective location. Released in 1963 in the USA, this is one of those epic sword and sandal films intended to be portrayed on a grand scale (yet with a modest budget). There are arrows, swords, battle axes, lances, daggers, and other weapons of mediaeval battles, castle sieges, and of course long boats (Viking boats were probably a bit more than appears, but you get the idea). Beautiful women, but no skin flick here, and the gore is tame compared to contemporary FX, but there is blood and conveyed images of death. Hokey, campy, considered B-movie classic for making fun of as you watch (but secretly you enjoy the ride). Somewhere around an hour and 24 minutes long, this DVD presentation is a good copy, clear images, soundtrack matches close enough, and everything you expect about a modest budget Viking film made fifty years ago, and the sets, cast, and costumes are convincing enough. Heads up, pay no attention to the opening credits not being in English, this DVD is in English throughout the film itself, although there is a foreign trailer included if you are interested. Had this film been made a decade or so later, it would have included some very pretty women a lot more liberally sharing their assets. Not this time.

2.0 out of 5 stars Zeus meets Odin August 13, 2013

The mythology is mixed between Norse and Greek. It appears ridiculous. No dancing girls in Viking ceremonies or vestal virgins.
