Book Description

October 11, 2011
The Milan-based interior design and architectural firm Studio Peregalli presents for the first time their breathtaking environments that capture the classic elegance of the past. Studio Peregalli is the master of making interiors look brilliantly timeworn. Partners Laura Sartori Rimini and Roberto Peregalli have a distinctive ability to work in virtually every historical style-from Renaissance to Victorian-to create interiors that are atmospheric and magical, conjuring up a real or imagined past.
The Invention of the Past profiles the firm’s domestic and public projects, including residences for such leading families as the Etros and the Zegnas. Organized by house elements-facades, libraries, dining rooms, bedrooms, and other spaces-the book focuses on their opulent and whimsical furnishings and old-world craftsmanship. Studio Peregalli juxtaposes authentic works of a particular period with replicated pieces to create an illusion that becomes something real and evocative. The book features lush color photographs of their oeuvre, along with reproductions of drawings, maquettes, and plaster models.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Whether they are building a 19th-century-style Moorish pavilion from the ground up or restoring a palazzo in Milan, Laura Sartori Rimini and Roberto Peregalli of Studio Peregalli use an exacting attention to detail and history to create interiors that look beautifully timeworn. (Their skill echoes lessons learned from their mentor, the late Renzo Mongiardino.) Elegant rooms—decorated in a staggering range of styles and periods—are paired with drawings and models in this comprehensive look at the firm’s work." ~Architectural Digest

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book! December 31, 2011

The word "Refinement" would best describe the content of this new interior design book assembled by two Italian architects. It is void of the frills, frou-frous and noriah of pretentious and common artifacts that plague many design books. The authors have created faultless interiors that convey exquisite inbred beauty. They intertwined the photos with architectural drawings and models that provide a blueprint for the genesis of the room's decor. The photos themselves are taken at an angle that give the impression that the reader is gingerly peering into the room and have a soft touch delivering a rustic effect.

Their Italian and European rooms combine spare yet mostly sublime antiques, furnishings and colors, all very sober and contained in their lines. Whether in a palatial room or a modest country dwelling, the colors from the walls, the wood of the furniture and the presented fabrics create a soft yet very rich atmosphere, in particular the patinas in earth tones and the stencils from the romantic or Renaissance designs. These pages provide essential details or recipes for genuinely elegant interiors, and they demonstrate that restraint wins over efforts to artificially copy beauty.

This book will be a precious reference in the coming years as a professional muralist and interior designer (http://www.frenchdesigning.com); I would highly recommend it to anyone in my line of work or with an interest in art or design.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing book February 17, 2012

This book iis no doubt the modern edition of Renzo Mongiardino's ROOMSCAPES which is out-of-print now.
In fact The Studio Peregalli is the new interpretation of the fabled milanese interior designer which was famous for his opulent interiors, rich wall treatments justaposing
trompe l'oeil, fabric, marquetry inlay and other techniques. Thank God in this era of the blank interiors - a dash of colour by Peregalli and associates gives some reinterpretation of beautiful things past, leaving the whites and beiges for airport or public bathrooms use only !
