At the start of Britton's solid third thriller to feature CIA loose cannon Ryan Kealey (after The Assassin and The American), Kealey has been wandering the world, seeking solace after his girlfriend and fellow agent, Naomi Kharmai, walked out on him four months earlier. When his CIA handler Jonathan Harper tells Kealey he'll produce Naomi if Kealey will come back on the job, Kealey agrees. The job entails tracking down an Algerian terrorist, Amari Saifi, who's abducted several Americans in Pakistan. When Saifi ups the ante by capturing Brynn Fitzgerald, the acting U.S. secretary of state, the assignment shifts into high gear. The exciting kidnapping scene underscores Britton's strength—high-octane action—but the plot and characters adhere too closely to the rules and regulations of the genre. Hopefully, this obviously talented writer, who gets better with each book, will either amp up the complexity or drop Kealey and move on to new territory. (Mar.)

More About the Author

Andrew Britton was born in Peterborough, England, in 1981. He spent his formative years in the UK and Camlough, County Armagh Ireland, a small village which is home to most of the family on his mother's side. In 1988, his family immigrated to the United States, taking up residence in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Just before his junior year of high school, Britton moved to Raleigh, North Carolina, where he currently resides.

Britton graduated from Leesville Road High School in 1999 and immediately joined the U.S. Army. He served as a combat engineer for three years. During that time, he was assigned to the 1st Engineer Battalion at Fort Riley, Kansas. In the summer of 2001, he received orders for Korea, where he served with the 2ID, the famed 2nd Infantry Division. He was honorably discharged as a specialist in 2002.

Less than two months after separating from the armed forces, Britton began taking classes at Wake Technical Community College, transferring to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in the fall of 2004. As an undergraduate at UNC, Britton studied economics and psychology. His education has been on hiatus for the past year, though he intends to return to school as soon as his schedule allows.

Apart from writing, Britton enjoys reading, traveling, and the occasional beer at the local bar.

The story is fast paced with a good blend of factual people and places with fictional ones. I thought the kidnapping of the acting US secretary of state believable and well done. I had one tiny issue ...having not read the prior two books, I felt I was missing details to some of the characters, their relationships and their motivations which made pieces of the story feel incomplete. It's obviously a series which the author plans to continue with the opening left at the end. If you're interested in this book, I'd recommend reading the prior two first.

Four months ago CIA Agent Naomi Kharmai ended her relationship with CIA operative Ryan Kealey. He took it bad, walking off the job to roam aimlessly around the globe. However the agency needs Ryan's brand of service immediately; as the CIA leadership believes only his out of control lunacy can handle a particularly nasty cleaning job behind enemy lines.

His CIA handler Jonathan Harper offers the despondent agent a deal; he will present him Naomi if Kealey returns to work; Kealey accepts. Kealey is to find and take down Algerian terrorist Amari Saifi, who has kidnapped several Americans in Pakistan. As Kealey searches for his target, Saifi announces his presence by boldly abducting acting Secretary of State Brynn Fitzgerald.

In his third espionage thriller (see THE ASSASSIN and THE AMERICAN) Kealey remains out of control and fun to watch, but has lost some of his edge. Still this terrorist vs. antiterrorist High Noon tale is fast-paced and filled with action of a blow em up variety. Readers who enjoy a high octane tale will be pleased with Andrew Britton's latest escapade though it reads too similar to his hero's A book encounters.

I enjoyed reading this book; however, I expected AB (Andrew Britton) to close the loop on his previous novel, The Assassin. In addition, I expect sequels to reveal more about main characters; especially the protagonist(s). I learned nothing new about Ryan Kealey, John Harper or Naomi Kharmai.
