Book Description

April 1, 2011
When Jesus called his disciples, his invitation was simple: "Follow me." But what Greg Sidders soon found after deciding to follow Jesus is that this simple invitation is harder and scarier than it sounds. In The Invitation he invites readers to venture beyond risk-free Christianity and live as true disciples. He takes readers on a spiritual journey through seven passages in which Jesus describes what his disciples will do, challenging readers to live the adventure of following Jesus.

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

Soon after I accepted the invitation to follow Jesus, I started avoiding him at all costs.

I can still remember the flash flood of joy I felt at that moment when I first entrusted my life to him, because for the first time I knew that I was going to live forever. And I was so excited when I bought my first Bible, with the words of Christ in red.

But then I did something that turned my euphoria into vertigo. I read the words in red. I saw phrases like
-"Hate your father and mother."
-"Take up your cross."
-"Do good to those who hate you."
-"Sell your possessions."
-"Be slave of all."
I discovered that this man who called me to follow him was a radical.  Either that or I had purchased a defective Bible.  I borrowed my friends' Bibles and compared them to mine. Sure enough, theirs said the same thing. I pointed to Jesus' most shocking statements and asked them, "Have you read this?"

They would just yawn and say, "Uh-huh."  I couldn't understand why they weren't as appalled as I was.

To actually do what Jesus said was unthinkable to me. And yet I wanted to be a Christian--because I wanted to go to heaven. So I did the only sensible thing: I stopped reading the gospels.  I had wonderful devotions in the epistles, but I steered clear of Jesus.

Then one day a simple question popped into my mind: How can I call myself a Christian if I don't follow Christ?

That was when I decided to risk re-entry into the gospels. And my life hasn't been the same since.  Those passages that used to intimidate me have become precious to me, and I cannot imagine reverting to a mild version of Christianity with all the hard sayings of Jesus edited out. How hollow that would be.

Might you use that word--hollow--to describe your Christian experience? If so, could Christ-avoidance be the cause? Is it possible that you have been frightened away by his most revolutionary teachings, or that you have been insulated from them by tidy theology or by the trappings of Christianity? What might happen if you were to take a fresh, unfiltered look at the discipleship sayings of Jesus? There are seven of them in the gospels, and I wrote this book to help you think deeply about what obedience to each one would look like.

No doubt you'll wrestle with the same questions I have had: Did Jesus really mean that? Could I actually do that? What are my other options? But, as you take the risk of courageous obedience, you will discover that, even though Jesus is more than you bargained for, it is when you run to him, not from him, that you find the easy yoke and light burden he came to give.

Discover the Exhilaration of Simply Following Jesus

When Jesus called his disciples, his invitation was simple: "Follow me." But after deciding to follow Jesus, Greg Sidders found that this simple invitation is harder and scarier than it sounds. He suddenly had to ask himself, "How can I call myself a Christian when I don't do what Christ says?"

Sidders invites you to venture beyond risk-free Christianity. Join him on a spiritual journey through seven passages of Scripture in which Jesus describes what his disciples will do, and take the challenge to live the true adventure of following Jesus.

You'll discover what Greg did: that the teachings of Jesus seem hard--until we actually practice them. When we take the leap of obedience, we break through to the vibrant faith we long for.

"Greg Sidders has written a clear and powerful reminder that being 'all in' is Jesus's call to any and all who follow. This is one 'invitation' that I recommend everyone accept!"--Dennis J. Keating, senior pastor, Emmanuel Faith Community Church, Escondido, California

"As I read The Invitation, I kept saying 'Ouch!' and 'Hallelujah!' at the same time. With one great, gentle breath, Greg blew the fog off the gospel and off my misconceptions about following Jesus."--Brad Franklin, lead pastor, Lakeside Church, Folsom, California

Greg Sidders, a former journalist, is pastor of White Pine Community Church in Cumberland, Maine. He and his wife, Robin, have three sons.

4.0 out of 5 stars Conflicted March 26, 2012

I have lived my life as this book teaches for the last nine years but I feel compelled to point out several things. It's absolutely true that to show Christ to the world you must act out of love for those around you. However, I believe that loving on non-believers is equally as important as loving on believers. I've been following Christ for nine years and married to an atheist for ten years. My husband has become more receptive to my faith through my quiet acts of Christ-like love for him and everyone around me. Which brings me to my second point. The author puts a huge emphasis on the three steps to make new believers. These steps are 100% accurate but he leaves out a vital piece of the puzzle: God's timing. The faith walk of another person is a deeply personal thing between them and God. I can follow these steps and show Christ's love but their transformation will happen in God's timing not my own. It's dangerous to believe that we can build new believers simply by following these three easy steps and ignoring God's ultimate plan.

Like all Christian inspirational books, this one must be read during prayer. Overall, I like it because it points out the importance of loving those around you and treating Christ as your one true husband, father and friend.

4.0 out of 5 stars "The Invitation" By Greg Sidders April 2, 2011
Format:Paperback
Jesus called his disciples with a simple invitation: "Follow Me." He calls us the same way. What many find, as they set out on this journey, is that a simple invitation quickly becomes incredibly difficult to follow. Greg Sidders is one of those people. A person for whom the 'red letters' became something to avoid.

In The Invitation, Sidders invites readers to go deeper into their obedience to this command. He explores what Jesus is calling us to, what discipleship is, and why it is more than worth giving up everything to follow Jesus. Set out in thirteen chapters with a study guide in the back, The Invitation is a formulaic Christian living book (Step 1: Begin each chapter with personal story. Step 2: See what the bible has to say about the issue. Step 3: Bring the point to the reader) designed to offer an introduction to, and encouragement in, the Christian life.

As such, it is quite a good book. Sidders honesty is one of the qualities which helps the most in making this an effective introduction to following Christ. He does not mince words when it comes to acknowledging how he has struggled to take Jesus' commands seriously. He offers a frank analysis of what it costs to follow Jesus, and what it costs to not follow Jesus. Though it is a formulaic book, Sidders is a decent writer. His stories are not excessive, nor off the point, and even if they felt a little bit too much like mediocre sermon illustrations they still got his point across. More important than the style, or the quality of the stories, is the fact that Sidders gives a theologically sound, experientially satisfying, and spiritually encouraging call to the life of discipleship as a core part of Christianity.

Many of Sidders chapters contain good summaries of material you can find elsewhere. Some examples: Chapter 3, 'Minimum Requirement', argues for discipleship as a requirement of faith; I felt like I was read a concise, and clear, Dallas Willard. Chapter 11, 'Abiding for Dummies', is straight out of Andrew Murray. Chapter 13, 'The Power of One', is vintage Robert Coleman discipleship/multiplication material. You may have thought, from the first sentence in this paragraph, that I was about to criticize Sidders for this. I intend quite the opposite. You can do far worse, and not much better, than those kinds of influences.

4.5 of 5 Stars. Recommended. I am happy to say that this is a book I will use. It will come in handy as a pastor, and I can see myself ordering more copies to give away. Grab one if you get the chance.

5.0 out of 5 stars Putting Reality to Ink March 24, 2011
By Tsutt
Format:Paperback
Looking back over my twenties I spent as a youth pastor both in Southern California and Chicago I am surprised at the amount of books I squeezed into the weeks between multiple gatherings, projects and Sundays. Attending Grad school at Wheaton College raised the bar of books on my "have read" list to a whole other level. Remembering all of the wonderful authors and insights throughout the years I can honestly say that when Greg Sidders gave me his new book "The Invitation" I was hopeful but I wasn't holding my breath for anything new or earth shattering. Two of the books I have enjoyed the most this past year are Francis Chan's book "Crazy Love" and Greg Sidders book "The Invitation." It resonates with my 30 year old soul as I am constantly comparing the twenty-first century church to that of the first. Following Jesus is simple but never easy. Greg reminds me how brutally beautiful the life of a follower of Jesus truly is. The years Greg has invested in studying the Gospels have been infused into the pages of this book and I feel blessed to have benefited from new insights and his beating heart for the reality Jesus calls us to.
