As an old school guy it was refreshing to read the true story of Buddy. This book is an eye opener for people who didn't know the true story of the original leader of the Winter Hill Gang. Highly recommended!

I come from Winter Hill. I knew Buddy and the guys his son wrote about. They were friends of mine. This is the first book I have read about this subject. I thought, this being written by one of his kids, it might be pretty good, or at least factual. It was written by a kid that was 12 years old when his father died. He wasn't there. His story is gathered from friends of his father. That must have been quite a while ago as most of them are gone. I found it interesting. I particularly liked the story about the fight in Charlestown. I wonder why he left so many things out? Hoosac Pier, The Alibi, The pier Grille, etc. Not much mention of his brother Jim, or some of his father's other friends that were there. I think Mike did a pretty good job, but I felt completely offended at the very start, when he suggested there was no honor left after his father died. I'm sure his father would have something different to say. The general public, may not like these guys, and the people who live on The Hill today may not like having their area associated with their memory, but that's life. Go look at old pics from the fifties, sixties, and seventies, and then take a walk or drive through the area today. See how far the new residents have let it slide. How do you think we feel about that? Ask the people that were there. Back in the day. While not a lot of Buddy's friends are alive, there are a lot of people still living that grew up there at the time. History is great. You can read about any era or time in history, but to get the real feel and understanding, you had to be there. The real story of Winter Hill still needs to be told, by someone that was there and lived the life. It wasn't all about crime, and gangsters. While they played a big part, it is also about the people of the two neighborhoods involved.Read more ›

It was amazing to hear the true story from his son, stories I had heard as a kid from my father. Buddy McLean was a respected name in Somerville, it was great to hear how the Winter Hill Gang got started. I recommend this book to everyone.

Since they lived in Somerville for many decades, they were very interested in the story. Really enjoyed the book.
I didn't read it, before giving it to them. It made them happy, and that was the important thing to me..

I enjoyed this book because it shows a childs love and admiration for his dad.
The strength and power of a man caught up trying to help others but also
the other side of life in Winter Hill in that era...
