Book Description

A bilingual out-of-work British actor is offered a movie role in Germany just before World War Two. His Nazi employers have no idea that he's Jewish as well as British and when war breaks out his fate is inextricably linked to Hitler's favourite, the ice-queen of German cinema Eva Wendt as well as the SS, for whom, as a German movie star, he becomes their poster boy and propaganda puppet.

Moving swiftly from pre-war London through Nazi Germany and spitting out its protagonist into post-war Hollywood, Hillgate's masterpiece is a swift-moving Bildungsroman, an erudite, concise allegory for the hypocrisy inherent in Nazi ideals and superstitions and their failure to overcome the essence of the human spirit.

Meticulously researched and well-presented, based on true events but fictional, this is the story of what could have happened and raises the question of whether or not Hillgate's protagonist has behaved morally, amorally or immorally.

Previously a no.1 on Amazon UK in its genre (spy stories) in May 2007 under the title 'Julius', the film rights of the novel have been optioned and this is a new release exclusively for Kindle, with different artwork and title.

This book comes highly recommended by a number of reviewers in both the United States and Europe.

3.0 out of 5 stars Get the history right! August 16, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Stars 2.75

The good stuff first. There is a wonderful love story mixed dancing through the pages. The hero/villian AbeWeinstein, Julius Schiller/Julian Tate, take you through the dark days of film making for the Third Reich-he's a Jew. He falls in love with his leading lady Eva Wendt/ Betty Weinstein-also a Jew. This has potential or so I thought. The author Jack Hillgate/David Levine does an excellent job with scenery descriptions and character development. Gals, you will the story of struggle and love. There are some very touching and moving parts through the story, with a few interesting twists. Okay, those are the good parts.

However, if an author is going to pick an exact time in modern history, get the facts straight. Mr Hillgate, you are a film maker. Surely you perform excellent research for your productions. Why should a book be any different? The time line and events are unbelievable to those of us who know better. The topic you are covering is very real and deserves good, solid research. An example: It's July 1944 and Herr Schiller is caught in an ambush with his German (no longer) comrades. He is knocked out during the ambush and wakes-up three weeks later in an American Hospital and the war is over? That would make it late July 1944 or early August. Come on. Oh and what about it being 1939 and the Germans are bombing England and The Lowlands and France have been conquered? Please!

As an amateur historian of this era, I cringe when I see people doing zero research and putting it out for public consumption. Also, at times I believe you were recollecting personal stories from the past as the story moved on. At times, the hatred and anger (well justified) for the Nazis was overwhelming and obtrusive. It detracted from the story and the characters you sought to build.

In the future, if you chose to write about this topic again, please get the history correct and save the commentary for your films.

3.0 out of 5 stars Beach Book June 15, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Price was right. Good beach book if you suspend belief throughout the book. It's OK but historically impossible on about every level. Unfortunately I know a lot about the period which spoiled it for me. Good for 3 stars and good for the price. Entertaining but I expect historical fiction to at least be semi-accurate concerning the period. This simply could not be.

5.0 out of 5 stars Deep November 29, 2011

Format:Kindle Edition
A fascinating story on an equally fascinating era and subject. The elements of pacing, setting, plot, narrative and description and dialogue are great, making the work a touching page turner that it is. In so many aspects, it brings to mind the book Fortune Calls that highlighted things just before the holocaust. This is a deep story I am glad I read.

4.0 out of 5 stars I really enjoyed this even if it didn't happen March 4, 2014

I love a good WWII story and prefer fiction or maybe fiction based on some bases of reality. I realize that when I read fiction, it is not real... right?? So, I must suspend my belief and not take the story to heart. If I am a fact checking kind of person, don't read this book. I thought this was a fun story (obviously, Nazi Germany is a murderous terrible time period) and the author made the main character a likeable guy. He had a sense of humor and the author drew me into the plot in such a way as I thought, yes, yes, not real, but it could have happened. There were sad and tragic moments within the book, but this is expected given the genre. While maybe at times a little predictable, so what, it was a good, very good story I would even say 4 stars a 1/4. Even in life there are circumstances that occur that are not necessarily believable, but things do happen and life is a wild and strange ride with many unexpected coincidences. I say, if you like reading about this time period, this will be a good read. After reading this, I would read another from this author.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good read June 23, 2013

I did enjoyed this book. The story build up and suddenly, like the war, it takes you down but it does not end there. It is like a second story again with its highs and lows. The end is rather surprising. The book has a bit of every thingh in it that made it a good read.

2.0 out of 5 stars Fiction, not good enough
The story line was an interestig idea but too far fetched and not true. There are so many real stories around that there is no need for fiction in this field.

More About the Author

Hi everyone - I'm Jack Hillgate and I very much hope that you enjoy reading my books or watching my films. I'm always grateful when anyone writes a review of something I've done (good or bad) and I'm happy to answer any reader queries or suggestions for something you'd like me to tackle - please don't be shy! The last film I wrote was 'Dead in France' which had a limited theatrical in the US and is out now on DVD in the UK and the US plus there's a French theatrical at some point. A lot of readers have asked when 'The Jew with the Iron Cross' and 'The Criminal Lawyer' will be turned into films and I am working on it. Many have also asked for me to hurry up and publish Cocaine Volume 2 because I left everything hanging at the end of Volume 1: this should be out by the time you read this and Volume 3 (the final in the trilogy) should be out by Spring 2015. I'm also working on the sequel to 'The Criminal Lawyer', which follows Jonathan Berrie into the next phase of his adventures, and is tentatively entitled 'Crunched'. Thank you for reading!
