Editorial Reviews

Review

"The Iron Giant is a story so gripping that when you begin to read it aloud, everyone stops to listen, young children and old people alike. And once you know it, you never forget it. A classic is something utterly strange and original, and yet as deeply familiar and necessary as your own hands. The Iron Giant is like no other story in the world, and thirty years after its first publication, we need it as much as ever." -- Philip Pullman, author of The Golden Compass and The Subtle Knife

"A wonderfully inventive story with the vivid language and startling images of the poet. It has music, momentum, and magic. What else can you ask for?" -- Norton Juster, author of The Phantom Tollbooth

"High-spirited and entertaining... The Iron Giant is a tall-tale hero in a parable for today." -- The Horn Book

"One of the greatest of modern fairy tales." -- The Observer  (England)

First, you should know that this book, though the basis of the Iron Giant animated film, differs from it significantly. The early parts of the book, in which Hogarth meets the giant, are similar, but the ultimate conflict is totally different. The almost overt christian symbolism of the movie (in which the giant sacrifices himself for our sins and is reborn), is much more subtle in the book and perhaps not there at all. The earth is threatened by a monster from space and the giant subjects himself to great suffering in order to trick the creature into self-immolation.

Sound like kiddie stuff? Oddly, my four-year-old son loves this book and I have read it to him many times. Perhaps he can relate to the situation of Hogarth and can imagine himself as defender and champion of this massive, mysterious creature. I think he also likes the language, which is repetitive without ever being cloying. Hughes has no fear of long compound sentences or polysyllabic latinate words.

The lesson of the book is similar to that of the movie, about assuming the best of others, and taking risks to defend those you care for, but the book is more sophisticated. The art in this edition is lovely, and fits the tone of the book much better than stills from the movie possibly could.

Not only is this the unedited, unabridged, original story by British Poet Laureate Ted Hughes, the illustrations and way this book is done will amaze and astound you. A must-buy for all collectors and lovers of classic books, young and old, old and new.

I'm a librarian with two boys, 5 and 3, who love robots and books. This is a little long for the 3 year old and I usually skip some of the wordier parts for him, but the 5 year old is engrossed with the whole thing. The illustrations are very unique and appealing and the language is just wonderful for reading aloud. This is a big hit at my house and I am so glad I purchased it for our collection.

I loved this book. The art and layout is beautiful. However, the kids weren't too interested in it (4 and 6 years old). Based on other reviews I expected it to be different from the movie, but did not expect it to be so different. I only knew this story through the excellent movie, so this original story initially strikes me as wrong. I will return to it again to judge when it has sunk in a bit more.

Beyond the literary content - I love having this beautiful book on my shelf.
