4.0 out of 5 stars Superb Dean tv performances - a must-own March 31, 2004
Format:DVD
Three of Dean's half hour tv dramas are presented here with lots of extras. I AM A FOOL and THE UNLIGHTED ROAD are well known but SOMETHING FOR AN EMPTY BRIEFCASE is a find- thought lost and not seen for half a century.
Dean is brilliant in these three very different performances, giving us a kaleidoscope of what he was capable of. He is vulnerable and yearning in I AM A FOOL, confident but sensitive in THE UNLIGHTED ROAD, and macho/sexy in BRIEFCASE. In fact, his performance in the latter makes one wish he had played Liliom or Billy Bigelow (LILIOM/CAROUSEL) - it's a case study for the perfect interpretation of that role.
Dean was incredibly sexy and incredibly talented - his talent as displayed in the dozens of tv dramas he appeared in showcase his abilities far more than the three released Hollywood films. Any fan of Dean's must collect these performances - there are a number of them out there on DVD and VHS: HARVEST, THE BELLS OF COCKAIGNE, HILL NUMBER ONE; I AM A FOOL; THE UNLIGHTED ROAD; SOMETHING FOR AN EMPTY BRIEFCASE; LONG TIME TILL DAWN; ABRAHAM LINCOLN, etc.
This is a must-own rarity DVD for every Dean fan.

(BEWARE: THIS IS A REVIEW OF THE VIDTAPE-VERSION OF THIS RELEASE FROM 2005)

Being interested in the life of James Dean, I was very excited when I bought this DVD from a private seller for only a few bucks. However, the excitement quickly faded after I'd put the disc in the player and was ready to see SOMETHING FOR AN EMPTY BRIEFCASE, a rare TV-movie starring Jimmie which I hadn't seen before. Unless I received wrong disc (which I doubt, as it read THE JAMES DEAN ERA) this release is another sad chapter in the history of false advertisement. On the cover, this DVD claims to include the following rarites:

- Three James Dean TV-movies, SOMETHING FOR AN EMPTY BRIEFCASE, THE UNLIGHTED ROAD and I'M A FOOL
- Original commercials with James Dean
- Rare outtakes
- Trailers from the films GIANT, EAST OF EDEN AND REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE
- Film posters
- Photo gallery
- Car racing footage
- Special James Dean recordings: "Playing bongos '54," "Dean's Lament" and "Jungle Rythm"

Sounds rather fantastic to any admirer of the fascinating actor....however, this is not what we are given. My disc contains the documentary FOREVER JAMES DEAN, the trailers from the three films and advertisements for other DVD's, i.e. some Johnny Cash-stuff. FOREVER JAMES DEAN is an interesting enough documentary, as it includes several interviews with friends and colleagues of the actor, but it is by now already available on the EAST OF EDEN-DVD from Warner Brothers, so its inclusion feels superfluous. The same goes for all the trailers. I've searched through the DVD several times and can't find anything else. Avoid this item and buy the version from Eclectic DVD Dist instead; it doesn't include all the goodies that this release was supposed to, but at least it doesn't claim to offer more than it actually does.

4.0 out of 5 stars LOGO WARNING!!!!! October 4, 2008
By larryj1
Format:DVD
I agree this set contains a great selection of material. I'm pleased with the DVD quality. But, unfortunately, there is a "Stardust Records" logo 3 times during Something For An Empty Briefcase. None of the other material has this logo. Had I known this, I would not have purchased this set. I must deduct one star for this desecreation of an otherwise great set.
