Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

This harrowing documentary chronicles the decade long trials and emotional traumas incurred by a gay Michigan man, Stephen Matthews, and his straight father, Melvin Matthews, who were wrongfully accused by Stephen's ex-girlfriend and her homophobic boyfriend of molesting Stephen's son. Despite the fact that there was no physical evidence (although accusations included the torturous use of a machete), both Stephen and Melvin Matthews were sentenced to 35 years in jail. A chlamydia test which swayed the jury, was later revealed to give false positive results and lacks forensic value for use in sexual abuse cases. Eventually released from incarceration on this fact, both men went into the world to find that the prosecution wanted to put them on trial again.

I have always felt that the production company of Amy Sommer (Academy Award nominee for Waco; The Rules of Engagement) would be better and more accurately represented if it was called Eternal Vigilance Productions. Because every time I see one of her works I am reminded that that is the price of all freedom, both personal and civil. She, once again, and director Nonny de la Pena, along with the rest of their crew, have raised the form of documentary film from Shark Week on the discovery channel, back to the unblinking eye that should always be searching out the truth, however unpleasant, so that justice and not popular opinion can be seen. "The Jaundiced Eye" is another sterling example of that tradition.
This amazingly shown story of two me, wrongfully imprisoned for child molestation, shows us not only the devastating effect of homophobia on our justice system but also the bias that we as a country still feel toward those of an alternative life style.
Stephen Mathews, a gay man from Michigan, and Melvin Mathews, his straight father, were both sentenced to 35 years in prison when Stephen's ex-wife and, then, live-in boyfriend convinced Stephen's son to claim that he had been molested and tortured by the two men. They were convicted with no physical evidence, represented by an attorney who really didn't seem all that interested in performing his duties and forgotten by the community.
This film follows their later appeal and subsequent reintroduction to a society that, despite their proven innocence, still seemed uninterested or incapable of accepting them back into it.

This is just an amazing story and one I think everyone should see no matter whether they are gay or straight. The idea that one can be imprisoned on such flemsey evidence is shocking at best but a let down with the legal system and I guess society in general.

I have strong feelings about homosexuality but never to the extent that a father should be taken away from his son. It seems that is what has been successfully accomplished by a shocked selfish mother and her new influential boyfriend. I think their scheme has set a new low of depravity, and it's pathetic how many people jumped on board.
As unfortunate as the whole situation is, It appears the father and son have gone through a very life altering journey only to be better for it in some ways personally. I was impressed with the obvious changes in their character during the end, especially the Grandfather. The real true victim is the child with having a constant negative influence by these conspirators, who whether they thought they were morally justified or not, have committed such a deplorable act that their futures will never be enlightened and their souls forever in question. God will protect the child and one day he will be enlightened to the true evil that surrounds him.

Good reminder of the horrifying damage inflicted on totally innocent people by community hysteria and its encouragement by "professionals" who are untrained and unknowledgable about child psychology as it functions in the investigation of child sexual abuse.
