About the Author

John Dominic Crossan is the author of The Historical Jesus (T&T Clark, 1991). He chairs the Historical Jesus section of the Society of Biblical Literature.Luke Timothy Johnson is Woodruff Professor of New Testament at Candler School of Theology at Emory University, Atlanta, Georgia. The author of a number of best-selling books, he is also editor of the Anchor Study Bible.Werner H. Kelber is Turner Professor of Biblical Studies at Rice University.

John Dominic Crossan (born 1934) is a New Testament scholar, historian of early Christianity, Professor Emeritus at DePaul University, and former Catholic priest known for co-chairing the Jesus Seminar and writing books such as The Historical Jesus: The Life of a Mediterranean Jewish Peasant; Luke Timothy Johnson (born 1943) is a New Testament scholar and historian of early Christianity, Professor at Candler School of Theology and a Senior Fellow at Emory University, who has written books such as The Real Jesus: The Misguided Quest for the Historical Jesus. Werner H. Kelber is professor of Biblical Studies at Rice University, and author of books such as The Oral and the Written Gospel .

Crossan begins his essay with the statement, "my argument... does not propose that history equals faith. It does not propose that history replaces faith. It does not propose that history creates faith... there can be history without faith. But, and this is the question, can there be faith without history?... my argument... is about historical reconstruction and Christian faith but within one type rather than another type of Christianity...what I will later describe as incarnational rather than sarcophobic and/or docetic Christianity... if, as I argue, the fleshly, bloodly, bodily resurrection of Jesus is absolutely necessary in that former type of Christianity, what is meant by that claim?"
