This book has some good information and interesting projects. It is similar to most other books with basic information but then has different projects which are worth while doing. You will learn some new techniques. I recommend this book for your library.

I know NOTHING about jewelry and this book is perfect of me. Lots of full-color photos and explanation. The Appendix also points the way for further study. It may be too simple for some readers, but it is a good place for me to start.

This is a clearly written, beautifully produced, extremely helpful introduction to basic jewelry metalsmithing. It renders accessible many techniques initially intimidating to the beginner like myself, and does so better than many other books I've evaluated. The photo work is excellent, the step-by-step projects well selected and inspiring. More than adequate to give me the info and the confidence necessary to take on all sorts of new techniques and launch myself into a new hobby.

However, the book is physically assembled incorrectly -- the sheets after page 55 or so are glued out-of-sequence, creating a jumbled mess! So it is an inconvenient read at best, with all the flipping around required to track down the correct next page. And I'll be darned if I can find pages 72-73 anywhere in there.

I think this book would be most helpful for those who are interested in setting up their own studios/workshops; the first half of the book contains much information and many beautiful photos of tools, equipment, and studio space. To learn how to actually *use* those tools and equipment, however, you might want to look elsewhere. John Sartin's Complete Photo Guide to Making Metal Jewelry (or even Tim McCreight's classic The Complete Metalsmith) is a better reference if you want to learn the details of soldering, shaping metal, setting stones (especially setting stones), and creating patinas on metal. The Jeweler's Studio Handbook is a bit skimpy on these areas, although the step-by-step projects and gallery section tend to have a nice focus on using beads and found objects. So if you're interested in a more avant garde style, you'll definitely enjoy that. There's a bit of career advice in the end, too, but not much; had there been more, it would have been a good selling point for this book as well.

I have reviewed this at other sites but would hate to have someone miss it at a glance. This was the 2nd book I purchased after WireWork 3 years ago because I knew I wanted to go beyond wire. I am 100% self-taught, through books! forums and a lot of trial and error. This book is great for any artisan jewelry maker.. I learned to solder.. The through another boom perfected by technique. Learning texture techniques for metal - I practiced, learned and make original pattern wire designs that I make rolling mill plates for a really popular pattern and thinner designs for 1 or 2 time use.. Literally if you read, practice and do it again this book covers almost everything. I still reference it when adding something new to my skill set or refreshing my memory. II only wish I purchased the printed vs electronic version..

This book is an excellent resource book for those who are serious about pursuing a the field of jewelry as a hobby or home based business. It would be helpful to take classes in jewelry making skills to become more familiar with the information given in this resource. Personally, I bought the book specifically to learn how to make the pretty metal picture frame shown at the top of the cover of the book and then used in advertising the book. Sadly for me, the book doesn't give a step by step guide for this project. While it does give information that might have been used to build this frame, I hoped to learn how to make this particular piece. Other pictures on the cover of the book are also only inspiration and there aren't specific steps to making that piece. There is however a lot of good information. Julie
