Book Description

The Jewish Candidate is such a fresh subject for a political thriller that despite it being fictional, it triggered huge reviews and articles from Reuters, Chicago Tribune, The Jerusalem Post, Deutsche Welle, The Local and Spiegal Online, and others.

After a four year posting in Islamabad, Frank Carver, a reporter for the London Chronicle, is sent to Germany to cover the country’s most fascinating election campaign since the Second World War. Rudolf Gutman, the first Jew to run for chancellor, is promising to free Germany from the shackles of its past. He is up against Hermann von Tietjen, the charismatic Far Right candidate whose mantra is to rid Germany of the threat from its Muslim immigrants.

Carver and Wolfgang Renner, a freelance journalist, believe Tietjen has a more deadly agenda. He is secretly guiding Neo-Nazis in a plot to assassinate Gutman, using cash and contacts of old SS men to hire a killer. They prepare the ground with terrorist attacks that are pinned on islamists, sowing fear and hatred of Muslim immigrants.

Carver and Renner race to clinch the scoop of their lives. But no one believes them as Tietjen covers his tracks with his devilish gambit that plunges the nation into terror and a trail of killings.

As the clock ticks down to election day and the noose tightens around Gutman’s neck, their quest turns into a lone, bloody struggle for survival that brings them face to face with modern Germany’s dark secret. It seems that Carver has run out of time to unmask the assassin and to save Gutman.

'As the European Union faces a resurgence of the right-wing ultranationalism, veteran journalist David Crossland paints a chilling scenario of the threats posed to contemporary German society by neo-Nazi extremists. A real page-turner.' Efraim Zuroff, The Simon Wiesenthal Center

About the Author

David Crossland was born in 1967 in Bonn which was then the capital of West Germany and where his father was a foreign correspondent. 5.0 out of 5 stars A best-seller in the making May 17, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
David Crossland's The Jewish Candidate is truly a page-turner. I don't remember having read recently a novel about Germany's neo-Nazi scene as impressive as this. Crossland shows us a Berlin totally recognizable to anyone who knows the city, and with it provides the reader a sense of place that enriches his story. The two protagonists, Frank Carver and Wolfgang Renner, the journalists who cover Rudi Gutman's election campaign in his bid for chancellor of Germany, carry the story to an unexpected conclusion with their suspenseful, action-laden investigation of multiple terrorist attacks directed to discredit Gutman. One has to ask, however, if Crossland deliberately downplayed Gutman's characterization as a Jew to reflect the traditional patriotism of German Jews, who are known to consider themselves first and foremost as Germans. The story, which explores the extraordinary possibility of a Jewish chancellor in Germany doesn't benefit from showing little jewishness in Gutman the person, and almost none in Gutman the candidate, although this doesn't make it less fascinating. The Jewish Candidate is a well-written book that keeps one reading until late in the night.

5.0 out of 5 stars great read May 6, 2013
By Erik
Format:Kindle Edition
This book is an incredibly good read...Once I started reading it, I couldn't stop and finished it in less than 2 days. It's a brilliant idea, a Jewish candidate to lead Germany! How did the writer come up with an idea like that? Amazing...And it's really, really well told...Crossland really knows the material well. Great cover too.

1.0 out of 5 stars Truly awful January 4, 2014
By Matty
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I was mislead into buying this book due to a consistent 5-star rating by other readers. There is very little that I found to enjoy about this book. The characters in it are just downright silly....would you believe neo-Nazis who swear blood oaths by cutting themselves and bleeding into some beer and then drinking it. Wow...what an original idea. If you want to be bored to death by a bunch of stereotypes doing exactly what you would expect then to do in a second rate story, then this is the book for you. However, if you value the short time you spend on this planet, I would invest your reading hours in something else. There is a reason it is the price it is. Don't be fooled.

The basic premise -- a Jew running for the top spot in Germany's political system and a plot by neo-Nazis (and some real Nazis) to kill him and blame the deed on Muslims -- is interesting, and the book includes some fascinating visits to traditional Nazi locales, but the story-telling and character development fall far short of the mark.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not skeptical anymore June 8, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Yes, I realize that I was probably in the minority, but I admit to being skeptical of lower priced e-books on Amazon. They have always given me the impression that they were second string writing so to speak. That all changed with this book. I read a review of the book on website which had a link to read the prologue and 1st chapter. This caught my attention and I flew through it (albeit scrolling and squinting on my outdated bby). I was prepared to pay more than $1.99 when I went to Amazon to buy the book (now $5.99 but still very much worth it). This book is a terrific read. You can learn a lot of fact from good fiction and this book is a prime example. Living in Germany and knowing many of the locations only added to the enjoyment. I especially liked the writing and pace of this book. You know you have a winner when you start to see what percentage of the book you have left to read and get upset that it's going by so fast. This was one of those books. I think Crossland is easily on par with the likes of Daniel Silva, Alex Berenson, and Christopher Reich to name few off the top of my head. I hope he is already working on his next book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Portrait of a Germany that may be all too real July 1, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Given the drift towards the right in a number of European countries, I found the premise of this novel to be disturbingly realistic.

3.0 out of 5 stars a very outrageous premise but a fun read June 3, 2014

Crossland weaves a plot so outrageous it stretched my vivid imagination. Ah! But if it could be possible. One can only hope.

This was quite a good book. The story is interesting and the characters believable. Its one failing is quite a bit of the time it seemed rushed and not much depth.
