I originally bought this songbook in the 1960's when I was a teenager. During the ensuing years it disappeared. I've taken up guitar again, and wanted this songbook back. I was delighted to find it. It's still the best ever for those interested in folk music

In 1965 - this book taught me how to play guitar. The songs are shown in their original keys and are not easy for a beginning guitarist. HOWEVER, all songs are transposed and with the use of a CAPO (song book says CAPO at 3rd Fret) you are playing the same chords Joan plays. If your guitar is tuned.. you play right along with her.. sure beats Volga Boatman!

This book is filled with classic folk songs/ballads/hymns/lullabies, etc. that shouldn't be forgotten. They're songs for adults and children alike that have formed the roots of many current songs and stories.

I am so happy I purchased this book. It took me back to when I was 18, full of excitement and hope for the future. On their own, these songs reflect a humanity of the world which seems to be forgotten with the constant adoration of hip-hop, rock & roll and glitz. Folk singing is a very private thing - one, however, that could be shared with those you trust. Joan Baez was the perfect purveyer of the art. Her voice, interpretations and the documentation of these songs is a gift to our generation.

Haunting, beautiful melodies..Timeless tunes the likes of "Jackaroe" & "Fenerio" make this a treasure.. the only thing missing is Joans' perfect voice!

The piano accompaniment is lower intermediate, in easy enough keys that I could perform them with only one practice! The lyrics with melody are on a separate line above the accompaniment.
The guitar chords are only letters, but in parentheses are the chords played with a capo to avoid the more difficult bar chords and then a third set of chords allows a guitarist to play along with Joan Baez's original keys on her recordings.
Page turns on several pieces.

The best part is the small history of each song! The folk songs are divided into categories: ballads (narrative folk songs) and lyrics (emotive non-narrative songs focused on the emotional core). Songs included are: lyrics and laments, child ballads, broadside ballads, American ballads and songs, hymns, spirituals and lullabies, modern and composed songs, 2 indexes: titles as well as first lines. I am thrilled to have this book!
