Editorial Reviews

Review

When the student is ready, the teacher will appear.
I was particularly ready at the time Eric Whitfield shared this book his first with me.
My father-in-law had just died, and my wife, my daughters and I were in Wyoming for his funeral. Andy was a good friend. I'll always remember his gentle support throughout the years of joys and trauma we shared but he had suffered. It was Andy's time to go and Death came as a friend.
Harold Kushner's two books When Bad Things Happen to Good People, and How Good Do We Have to Be comforted me. Kushner observed that "Our memories give immortality to those we love."
Relationships don't die as our bodies do.
Eric Whitfield's The Job is an extraordinarily poignant vehicle for this message. As I read this short book, threads of imagery began to pull together in the middle and when I came to the end, the message hit home, as an emotional wave I should have seen building engulfed me.
There is a purpose and a time for everything.
If you have lost someone close to you, it is a time for you to read The Job, or perhaps it is a time to give this book to someone you love. --A personal note about Eric Whitfield's book, The Job from the Publisher, Robert J. Banis, PhD

Product Description

The Job is a story of self-discovery, set in the context of the relationship between Eric and his grandfather, and the changes that followed when death affected that relationship.
This story will move you.
It is the kind of book you will read again and share with others to help them in times of loss and grieving.

5.0 out of 5 stars Whitfield's The Job is an extraordinary book to share, January 3, 2002
This review is from: The Job (Paperback)
"The Job" read remarkably well, and as I got into it, around the middle of the book, I started to feel where it was going, and began to have a sense of how the presence of Eric's Grandfather continued to linger, affecting his life.
The symbolism of the ladder started to take shape, and in the last few paragraphs of the book, it suddenly came in on me what the book was all about.
I thought of my father-in-law, my father, my mother, and my grandfather --all gone--but who are somehow still with me every day. I understood, and I cried.
"The Job" is a remarkably well-constructed piece of art. It captures something we all feel, but don't talk about much. About how every day of our lives we are visited with the specters of people we loved and the things they did and said that continue to guide us.
"The Job" reminded me of Kushner's classic, "When Bad Things Happen to Good People", for as Kushner said, "It's peoples' memories that give us immortality."
I have seen a number of people buying one, then several more copies of this book. I understand-- because "The Job" is one of those extraordinary books you will want to give to someone you love to share what it means.

The Job is a very empowering book. It illustrates the significance of relationships changing through death, not ending.

This review is from: The Job (Paperback)
"The job" by Eric Whitfield, is a heart warming journey, through Eric's eyes, about the great love between a child and his Grandfather.
If you have ever lost anyone you love......you must read this book! It brings hope, and serenity to your soul and the peace of knowing that loved ones that have left us, are really never to far away. Good job, Eric!
