By far superior to AAL's other releases!

First off, the mix is golden! The first album (Animals As Leaders) was pretty decent on the production side, but it lacked the punch of a bass guitar. The second album (Weightless) mix was pretty awful - all I could hear was the kick drum! However, the Joy of Motion is well rounded in the rhythm section and the guitars are well balanced in the mids and higher ends. I love Nolly's contribution (Bassist for Periphery), a lot of funk influences on this album (oh yeah).

Secondly, the song structures are a lot more listenable. The first album was absolutely mind-numbing, but at times a little over-whelming... like there wasn't enough space/ambiance to process the music, at least for me. The second album improved on this by adding an actual rhythm section (i.e. Javier and Navene) and by Navene adding a lot of electronic tracks to the music. I believe adding Garstka (His subtle ghost notes are superb) on drums, shifting emphasis to the rhythm guitar, and having actual bass tracks has dramatically improved the listen-ability factor for The Joy of Motion... Love it!!!

Thirdly, Ahhhh The groove!!! I can actually bob/bang my head to a lot of this stuff! Tracks like Lippincott, Another Year, Physical Education (Personal Favorite), Tooth and Claw all stand out to me.

Whether you're a fan of AAL, enjoy progressive metal, or you're into instrumental stuff get this album! NOW!!!

(Update) I guess there are a lot of disappointed "fans", dudes whining about how "forgettable" this album is. This is progressive music!!! Why would I want to listen to something that sounded exactly like the last album or the album before? I love this album because it is different, yet still very much AAL!

I preordered the album after hearing the Tooth and Claw single, thinking it would be another hard hitting offering like their first album. The whole album was surprising from beginning to end.

They have stripped away some of the face melting and technicality in favor of tasteful melodic tracks like Para Mexer. And then you have your serious jams like Physical Education and Lippincott. This is such a fun album to play through, I highly recommend it for anyone both new Animals as Leaders fans and old.

This is an album that is sure to surprise and thrill the most elitist of musical lovers. However, it will not suffice for the hardcore minority insisting that AAL's best album will always be the first one. All of us AAL fans love the first, no doubt, but I am also of those who will anticipate every new release just because of the one truth that is distinct about them: Innovation.

On this latest effort AAL emerges as a band of sophisticated musical adventurers more interested in song-craft, melody and rhythmic complexity rather than providing endless pompous soloing. It is no longer the Tosin Abasi Experience. I would even go so far as to say that out of all of the AAL albums, this one is the most restraint when it comes to leads. This is not a bad thing. Like countless gifted guitarists like him, Abasi has discovered that song craft and rhythm will always supersede mindless soloing and this is what he is after on The Joy of Motion.

This release also sees the long overdue stylings of Javier Rayes. His contributions show that he is much more than just a guitarist for hire. No sir, he can definitely hold his own as a brilliant songwriter, e.g. "Para Mexer" & "Nephele." The former is a fantastic Latin piece that is very reminiscent of Al Di Meola.

There are times when listening to the album where echoes of the Mahavishnu Orchestra, King Crimson, Yes, Primus, Pantera and Al Di Meola come to mind, but this is what makes this band so amazing is that they are much more interested in different genre musical explorations rather than being pigeon holed as just another Djent Wonder. Matt Gartska is also phenomenal, but holds back his human octopus power playing for the sake of song craft; this takes much discipline indeed.

This band is just awesome. I thought I would look them up in Wikipedia, and was surprised to see a new album listed. I just bought it without listening. You can do that with this band, if you already like even a few tunes on some of the previous albums. Its like when you find the iced-cream version of your favorite candy bar. Its like "HEEEEEEEEEEY!", and your all "whaaaaaaaaaa?". Then you take a bite and you're like, "YEAAAAAAAAAAAH!".

First of all, this is not a "verified" review because I had my friend who has Prime buy it for me so I would get free shipping (edit: sorry, guess I should have written this under the CD format). This is AAL's most mature, best sounding album by far. The production is head and shoulders above the other two releases, which I also love. The songwriting is their most memorable yet, combining intricate riffs with soaring melodies. Tosin's playing is his most tasteful yet but still packed with cutting edge fury. There is even a touch of acoustic instrumentation on the album but it does not interfere with the album's ferociously progressive focus. Since the album was released at the end of March, I have listened to it hundreds of times and it keeps getting better. These guys are the real deal.
