Alys Clare continues to draw together the various threads created in earlier novels into a coherent whole, creating a family group which will form a basis for future plots. She paints an interesting picture of the establishing of Christian sanctuaries over those created by earlier religions, and the reactions of those affected by it. A thought provoking read for those interested in secular and religious history.

The story is far too romanticized. It feels girlish and young. The writing is good enough that I continued to read even when I found the story silly. This isn't a history, but rather a completely fictional tale set in the time of King Richard the lion hearted.

I have read several of Nicholas Sparks' books that I have found to be really page turners. This one wasn't for me. I did, however, liked the endearing visits to the father-in-law and the way the book ended.

I was a bit disappointed with this story. There was very little about the way that people lived in the times, their food, their housing, the differences in status, etc. There was too much of the occult, made up out of whole cloth by the author. I prefer an historic adventure story not an historic fantasy story. The story itself was mostly about Sir Josse tracking down a devil worshiper and the supernatural doings of the "woods people". For action there was only one small instance of sword play. It was nice to how see the main characters in the series evolved. It's okay but I wish there was more historic content.

A very well written story of life then. A family of personalities draw you in, and you know life as they breathe it.

This was a well written and researched novel which really evokes the age in which it is set. I really enjoyed the story and the way that the different plots were interwoven. We see the Abbess of Hawkenlye travelling to France to meet with Eleanor of Aquitaine and given an onerous task and her companion Josse given an even greater and more troubling task. The final chapters resolve not only the completion of these tasks but take us into the future to see how Josse and Helewise met the challenges and handled the joys that came with successfully overcoming them. I would recommend this novel and the series to those who like well written and interesting stories and well drawn characters.

The Joys of My Life is the 12th and final book in the Hawkenlye series. Once again Clare does a fine job weaving her characters into historic events. Her final chapter provides a satisfying ending and a glimpse into the future. I look forward to reading her next historical series.

I have enjoyed all of Alys Clare's novels on Abbess Helewise and Sir Josse. They are believable for the period and well written. I was sorry to see this as the last of the series, but I hope to read more of Ms. Clare's novels on another era.

This was the last book in this series. Author did an excellent job of tying the entire series together. I would strongly recommend Alys Clair's books.
