More About the Author

10 THINGS YOU MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT ME

10. The first book I ever wrote was about a hermit crab, inspired by a pet I once owned.

9. My favorite color is purple.

8. I love to read mysteries. When I was Judy's age, I read all 56 classic Nancy Drew books . . . in order! Jeepers!

7. I used to collect scabs so I could examine them under the microscope that I got for my 8th birthday.

6. My four sisters and I often made up our own language, which included the words "Hoidi Boidi", "oogey", "retzel crummypuss" and "poony-poony".

5. My favorite TV show is JEOPARDY!

4. To research my Sisters Club book, THE RULE OF THREE, I toured San Francisco in search of the ultimate cupcake. The winner: Sleepless in San Francisco. Think chocolate + coffee.

3. When I was a kid, I fell down a hill from chasing the ice-cream truck and had to get stitches.

2. When I was a librarian, I used to tell stories in sign language. That's how I got the expression "same-same" for Judy.

1. I share a birthday (February 28) with a famous princess, race car driver and gangster, a Rolling Stone, a French tightrope walker, and a winning racehorse named Smarty Jones.

Earlier this year, I was looking for some well-written chapter books for my six-year-old daughter who at the time was finishing the Step into Reading series of books and had expressed an interest in reading chapter books. My requirements were that the books had to be interesting and engaging with some illustrations to keep her motivated, and above all, well-written with good use of language.

Well, I recommend two series of chapter books for young girls ages 6-9 who are beginning to read fluently and independently and are ready for chapter books: the Ivy and Bean series and Judy Moody. Both series of books have great, fun story lines with central characters that children, especially young girls will easily relate to, and engaging illustrations that will appeal to visual readers.

The Judy Moody series of books appeals to my daughter because the stories are fun, the chapters are easy to read through (the vocabulary is appropriately pitched for young independent readers embarking on chapter books), and there are lots of interesting illustrations that are detailed and fun to observe. This is especially important given that my daughter is a visual learner and is attracted to pictures and illustrations.

This first book in the Judy Moody series focuses on the exploits of Judy Moody, a precocious young girl about to begin third grade. She is initially anxious about going to a new class, and refuses to cooperate with her new teacher Mr. Todd (she rudely calls him Mr. Toad). Over a period of time, Judy comes to realize that change does not necessarily mean something unpleasant and that she can still have fun in a new environment. This is a wonderfully written, fun book about a young child coping with change.

My nine year old daughter loves to read, I hardly can come up with enough supply. So that's a great thing about my kid. Since a while she is pretty difficult to handle. At her very young age she started talking back, being stubborn and making very snappy remarks she seems to think are highly original (they are to some extent, but they are also quite inappropriate...) We parents discussed it several times trying to find out what is the reason. We are treating her well and she is a good kid, she goes to a good school with a focus on diversity and friendship and her friends are all well behaved. So far we put her behavior down to a maybe unavoidable phase in growing up.
Until last night, when I read to her from "Judy Moody" BINGO.
The book is basically an instruction on how to be as obnoxious as possible. To adults the heroine may be considered really funny and it is clear that she is a little brat, but to kids that is not clear at all and naturally they learn the phrases and copy that behavior as is.
We are usually considered a pretty laid back family and even often enough accused of that, but good manners are really important to me.
I have no idea how a little kid should read these books and not conclude that is the correct way to act to one's surrounding.
So despite the fact that the stories may be entertaining and all that, in the future I will make sure she reads books where the kids talk politely and that being a brat is not the focus of the story and see if that makes a difference.

my 8 yr old daughter loves this set, in her words:

It is very detailed. Uses very complex language. It's full of happy thoughts. They are full of adventures, and full of frogs.

Got these for my daughter and she has loved moving from book to book. Have not had any of the behavioral issues that others have discussed. She enjoys the stories and I've even caught her older brother sneaking a peak at a couple of them.
