Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Written by juicing pioneer and juice machine marketer "The Juiceman" Kordich, this primer will attract readers hip to a new health craze. Juice is the health food of the moment, a tonic, some believe, for various maladies. And while the author is cautious about depicting his juices as panaceas (he heralds juicing simply as "a magnificent way to feed the body with valuable vitamins and minerals"), he clearly believes people should use juicing for what ails them. Recipes like "the blemish blaster" are fully designed with sickness in mind. Yet not all the juices are medicinal. Included are some interesting fruit combinations: morning blush (pineapple and pink grapefruit) and ginger jolt (apples, pears, gingerroot). The two "milkshake" recipes--"creamsicle in a glass" and strawberry shake--are inventive, calling for fresh-squeezed fruit juices and a too-tiny-to-be-toxic smidgen of nonfat dry milk. Recipes, however, are really a small portion of the volume. Kordich delves into the nutritional values of assorted fruits and vegetables, and gives information about purchasing and storing perishable produce. He also includes a question-and-answer section about juicing, containing his very practical solutions to some of juicing's challenges. Author tour; BOMC alternate.

From Library Journal

Television's "Juiceman" Kordich has collected nearly 100 of his favorite fruit and vegetable juice recipes along with a general introduction to the health benefits of juicing. The book nearly glows with the author's enthusiasm for his mission, helped along by the sunny colors and summery, fruity tastes of his mixtures with names such as Tropical Sunset, The Key Wester, Crimson Song, and Tangerine Sky. In addition to the standard carrot and apple, Kordich has created quite a number of unusual juice combinations; he even manages to make Red Pepper Juice sound appetizing, although the jury is still out on Sweet Potato Magic. To his credit, Kordich makes no outrageous health claims, although it is clear that he attributes his own good health to a daily regimen of fruit and vegetable juices and a low-fat, high-fiber diet. Kordich's book is not the last word on the subject, but it is filled with new, unusual, and delicious recipes to add to your juicing file. Recommended for most libraries.

More About the Author

Jay Kordich was born in 1923 just outside San Diego, California. He grew up in the shadow of his hard working father who was a fisherman and captain of his own fishing boat. Jay learned early on the value of a hard day's work. He also grew and developed the muscles that would serve him well as a football player at the University of Southern California.

In 1948 at the age of 25, Jay was diagnosed with a serious illness and was told he may not have long to live. After reviewing all the treatments available, he left California and traveled to New York City to see Dr. Max Gerson who was treating terminally ill patients with fresh raw juices and healthy cleansing diets. Jay became his patient and immediately began a regimen of large doses of raw carrot/apple juice. It wasn't long before Jay's health was restored and the direction of his life was changed forever.

From a star athlete to surviving a life-threatening illness, all by the age of 26, Jay soon decided he wanted to spread the word of fresh juices and eating a healthy diet. For the next 40 years Jay took his message to anyone who would listen, from county fairs to large department stores to seaside juicing shops. It was his passion to teach everyone he could reach how to be healthy through the power of fresh juices.

In 1990 Jay appeared on his first, national infomercial and Americans embraced him. They were excited to hear his message of long life, health and vitality. He became a New York Times best selling author, speaker and lecturer and created audio and video programs to spread his message of good health through live foods.

Through the years Jay has been featured on:
* More than 500 television shows
* Over 1000 radio talk shows
* USA TODAY (cover article)
* WALL STREET JOURNAL (cover article)
* PEOPLE MAGAZINE
* FORBES
* NEW YORK TIMES
* WASHINGTON POST
* ABC NEWS NIGHTLINE
NBC NEWS THE TODAY SHOW

In 2013, Jay & Linda Kordich released a completely updated edition of their book, "Live Foods Live Bodies - Recipes For Life". In this 230 page full color book, you will find Jay's life long secrets to vital health, stamina and longevity through the power of living foods and juices. There are recipes, meal planning, preparation guidelines, cleansing programs, and more. Page after page of information, served up step by step to help you achieve long lasting health into your 80s, 90s, 100s and beyond!

Now jay is a healthy and vibrant 89 years old. He looks and acts like a man half that age. He is out to teach everyone the "secrets" to his long and vital life.
Jay says, "My mission is to motivate, teach and inspire people on a global level to live a healthy life by consuming more fresh juices on a daily basis. These live foods have transformed and helped heal my life on so many levels for the past sixty years."

5.0 out of 5 stars A simple juicing book with TONS of recipes October 4, 2007
By EMA
Format:Paperback
This is a nice, straight forward juicing book that offers some "extras." It's simple, but it has an extensive array of recipes and leaves no stone unturned.

There's a section on produce that tells the reader what each item is good for (which vitamins and minerals it contains) and how to buy and store them.

The "Juiceman" also includes a crash course in all the nutrients we need to be healthy, WHAT we need them for, and in which juices we can find them in.

At the end of the book, the author includes a Q&A section and tips and points on how to make juicing an integral part of your life and what to eat to compliment a diet chock full of fresh juices.

All in all, this is a great book. It may not appeal to some who are in search of something a little more fancy, with a more complex layout. But, everything considered, it's a sure bet.

5.0 out of 5 stars Juiceman knows his juice. May 5, 2003
By T West
Format:Mass Market Paperback
This is the ultimate book on juicing.This is exactly what I wanted. Straight up juice recipes! No blender recipes (Well there are two at the end of the book for shakes but its minute after you read all the juice recipes). No add yogurt or soy milk and herbs. Nothing. Only add fruits and vegetables,just what I bought a juicer for juices! Jay delivers. His recipes are precise, being which he tells you how many carrots, how many apples, and tells the reader what the possible prevention tips of the particular juice are. My favorite is the juice for the sinus. And it does help.Also the energy and feeling you get from juicing is amazing. A pot of coffee could not get you going this good.
Now dont get me wrong there are good books on juicing out there but as stated above they want you to add other health ingredients (herbs and spices,soy milk etc...).Thats not the reason I wanted to juice.I wanted the benefits of juice and juice alone not something I can buy as a pill from the GNC and skip all the juicing. Buy this book if all you want are juice recipes. This is what it's all about.Straight up juicing!

5.0 out of 5 stars A life changing book for me January 22, 2003
Format:Mass Market Paperback
This book along with Dr. Norman Walker's "Fresh Vegetabels and Fruit Juice" helped me begin my quest and desire to mostly eat and drink raw fruits and vegetables. Ten years ago as a first-year graduate student at UC Santa Barbara I found myself with an acne problem that had plagued me for the last 5 years, despite ingesting numerous antibiotics. Moreover, my eyes were beginning to tire easily. Then one day I stumbled upon this book by Dr. Walker which from the onset made complete sense to me. Around the same time I saw an infomercial advertising the Juiceman Jr. which I bought the next week (and it hasn't failed me since!), along with the "Power of Juicing" book and began a regimen of fresh juice three times a day, using many of the recipes and suggestions from both books. Some amazing things began to progess over the next year:!
i) my acne not only completely disappeared, but I found myself having a very youthful, vibrant look. I looked better than I had ever in the past.
ii) I lost 15 pounds in one year and became a star on the softball field.
iii) I have not touched my reading glasses in the past 9 years.

In the words of Jack Lalane (who is older and more fit than 99.99% of all other Americans) "If man made it, I don't eat it".

One note on juicers: low-rpm juicers which press the juice now offer a nice alternative to the Juiceman or any other of the centrifugal juicers. They seem easier to clean and produce a higher yield of vitamins and less oxidation. I recommend Samson 6 in 1 juicer which has a 5 year warranty on the auger (like a drill bit which is used to press the juice) and a 10 year warranty on the motor.

The revolution does not begin in the streets, but rather with a tall class of carrot and spinach!
