Book Description

From the author of Audible.com's best sci-fi novel of 2012!

Six months ago, the world ended.

The Baugh Contagion swept across the planet. Its victims were left twitching, adrenalized cannibals that quickly became know as Junkies. Civilization crumbled as people created isolated safe havens to hide from the infected... and the possibly-infected.

Now, as society nears a tipping point, lives will intersect and intertwine across two days in a desolate city. THE JUNKIE QUATRAIN is four tales of survival, and four types of post-apocalypse story. Because the end of the world means different things for different people. Loss. Opportunity. Hope. Or maybe just another day on the job.

5.0 out of 5 stars Impressive Use of POV Switch-Up January 17, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
After writing Ex-Heroes and Ex-Patriots, Peter Clines proved that he can pull off mixing super-heroes and zombies in a post-apocalypse setting, but The Junkie Quatrain proves he can write awesome PA fiction, period. Not only does he know how to create thrilling suspense situations, Clines also has an impressive talent for manipulating POVs, carefully crafting detailed pieces of a four-dimensional puzzle...The Junkies Quatrain will leave readers begging for another fix.

One story features a woman who prefers to travel alone & yet she envies the pack mentality of the infected. Her description of the Junkies made me think of cannibals on crack, suffering from a disease like rabies. Another story follows a group of "outsiders," who leave their sancturary on a supply run; they cross paths with something more deadly than the Junkies. (Clines had me guessing until the very end.) A third story centers on a doctor, revealing the source of the Junkie infection & a dark secret at the sanctuary that serves as a home base for the outsiders. The final story is a thought-narrative by a lone survivor who doesn't like to share...but I was surprised that he didn't recognize another survivor from a pre-apocalypse encounter...I think if he had, it would had added more depth to that particular moment in the story.

Make sure you read the intro because it provides some fabulous insight into the stories. I will definitely "roll the dice" the next time I revisit this unique collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars A 4 course meal of Apocalyptic Awesomeness January 20, 2012
By Evan
Format:Kindle Edition
I finished this one fast, yeah sure its a short reade but it was so damn fun my last night reading it I sat down for a few hours straight.

Peter's writing style seemed different in this one and as much as I enjoyed his EX-Series, this is his best writing in my opinion.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Stories In The Junkie Quatrain February 25, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Peter Clines is a master of creating a fundamentally traditional post apocalypse, but with his own highly original twist. This time he gives us four stories with people that in different ways and with different results cross each others paths. He takes us again to Hollywood, where a contagion makes life terrifying for those who have not yet become infected. The infected is called "junkies" because they resemble of drug addicts. It takes a few days before symptoms become obvious, then their appetite and sexual desire increases, until they are totally devoured by hunger. They eat everything, cats, dogs and other people. They then live in a cannibalistic frenzy, constantly on the lookout for the next prey, before the disease breaks them down. It is very suggestive and scary. And for the survivors life is no longer a walk in the park. Surviving is the only important thing and no one can fully trust anyone else. My favourite character in the book is Holly, a tough fighter who carries fresh nightmares and a great sadness. The author shows with this little collection of short stories that he is a name to reckon with.

More About the Author

Peter Clines grew up in the Stephen King fallout zone of Maine and--inspired by comic books, Star Wars, and Saturday morning cartoons--started writing at the age of eight with his first epic novel, LIZARD MEN FROM THE CENTER OF THE EARTH.

He made his first writing sale at age seventeen to a local newspaper, and at the age of nineteen he completed his quadruple-PhD studies in English literature, archaeology, quantum physics, and interpretive dance. In 2008, while surfing Hawaii's Keauwaula Beach, he thought up a viable way to maintain cold fusion that would also solve world hunger, but forgot all about it when he ran into actress Yvonne Strahvorski back on the beach and she offered to buy him a drink. He was the inspiration for both the epic poem "Beowulf" and the motion picture -Raiders of the Lost Ark-, and is single-handedly responsible for repelling the Martian Invasion of 1938 that occurred in Grovers Mills, New Jersey. Eleven sonnets he wrote to impress a girl in high school were all later found and attributed to Shakespeare. He is the author of numerous short stories, EX-HEROES, EX-PATRIOTS, --14--, THE EERIE ADVENTURES OF THE LYCANTHROPE ROBINSON CRUSOE, and an as-yet-undiscovered Dead Sea Scroll.

There is compelling evidence that he is, in fact, the Lindbergh baby.
