I make my own break sticks, but they are identical to this one. Mainly posting to counter the ignorant review left by someone else.

If you have a terrier breed, their natural instinct in a fight is to BITE AND HOLD. This is different from most other breeds that will blindly bite and release anything that gets in their way (and for this reason, you should not use a break stick on any breed BUT terriers... for your own safety)

With terrier breeds, the break stick is one of the quickest and safest ways to break up a fight. Straddle your dog, grab the collar with one hand, and insert the break stick behind the molars and twist. The leverage will cause them to adjust their bite onto the stick allowing you to pull them away and back under control.

As a terrier owner, not having a break stick borders on irresponsible if your dog has any chance of another unleashed dog running up and starting a fight. Consider it like insurance... it only takes a split second to wish you'd had it.

These are used by more than just the idiots who illegally fight these wonderful dogs. I do dog rescue and currently have 3 Pitties who (since we brought in a third female) have taken to fighting. If you've ever been in the middle of a Pit Bull fight, you know they will NOT let go, no matter what. You can hit them, pull them, yell at them...it makes NO difference. The only thing you are going to do is piss them off further and risk badly injuring one or both of the dogs.....or yourself. Getting the dogs apart in a timely manner is of the utmost importance. These are powerful dogs and they can really hurt each other in a matter of minutes. I would never fight any dog (it is horrific), but will be buying several of these so I will be prepared the next time a fight breaks out between my Pitties. It would be irresponsible not to.

I have 4 rescued pit bulls and on occasion I foster dogs and volunteer with the local pit bull rescue. Dog fights happen, and hoping that don't won't help me if they do. Happy to have a tool I can use, just in case.

I am a volunteer at a local shelter and when we advance to Level 4 we need to have some required safety equipment. This item was exactly what I needed for my safety kit. Thanks for a good quality product!!

Just arrived. Good hard wood, and long enough to get a good grip. I don't have many dog fights, but now feel reassured that I can be more effective in breaking them up.

I have these break sticks and have made others myself and yes they work great. I made one of plastic that works great, too. The real reason I am writing this review is that once I took my dog out for a short walk and did not bring a break stick with me. Of course this is the day a woman with a foster pit bull terrier, lost control of the dog and it rushed at mine who in defending herself grabbed hold of her dog by the neck and was holding on while the other dog was trying to gnaw on my dog's head. Of course the woman and some bystanders were all screaming but doing nothing but yanking on the leash. A guy was drinking a soda and I grabbed it and threw it on the dogs head and they both let go. A week later I saw two other dogs going at it and I had my own bottle of water and spraying it broke them up, too. I don't know if this will work every time and still carry a break stick but its a good Plan-B.

Bought this because the last time my families pitbulls got close it took four people and finally a bucket of water to separate them. Not a fun day. They're usually separated with a ton of barriers between them, but twice they've got to each other due to human error. We were all thankful that we were all there at the time and my mom was smart enough to throw the water on them while we pulled them apart. It freaked us all out, and we got this incase one of us was alone why it happened and couldn't keep them from going at it even worse, AND get a container full of water. It seems well build, soft but durable, I think that would be good to prevent damaging their gums. Haven't had to use, and I hope I never do. It's definitely one of those things that when you need it, you better well have it or you're screwed.

Very simple and we hope we never need it. Too many people have let their dog aggressive dogs run around off lead (4 dog attacks on our bully)and our bully grabs and holds. Never with intent to kill, just to control and stop them from biting him. He shows tremendous restraint. Just tough to get him to let go and we don't always have water with us. He is great with dogs that don't want to maul him
