About the Author

Daniel Kalish, D.C., is a pioneer, having developed his own clinical model of functional medicine, which he now teaches to health care practitioners. The Kalish Method training seminar, a mentorship program in functional medicine, is a webinar-based training program founded on over eighteen years of clinical results from working with thousands of patients. Dr. Kalish teaches a logical sequence of therapeutic programs using the best lab tests available and focuses on how to communicate effectively with patients to correct chronic health conditions, and, importantly, how to build a thriving practice. Dr. Kalish was recently invited to participate in the One Mind For Research group by the Honorable Patrick Kennedy. The first One Mind For Research conference in Boston in 2011 was a gathering of the top 200 neuroscientists in the United States, coming together to form a unified front to promote research on brain disorders. For ten years Dr. Kalish directed The Natural Path Clinic in Del Mar, California, where he coordinated a team of medical doctors, nutritionists, chiropractors, and acupuncturists. Dr. Kalish now maintains an active international phone consultation practice. In his private practice, Dr. Kalish has developed nutritional programs for a varied group of patients, over 8,000 in all, ranging from Olympic athletes to new moms. His programs are highly effective across a broad population with a variety of health complaints. Dr. Kalish received his B.A. in Physiological Psychology from Antioch College, Yellow Springs, Ohio. He studied at the University of London and conducted research with biochemist Dr. Robin Monroe at Cambridge University. He also worked with renowned psychiatrist Dr. R.D. Lang utilizing drug-free treatments for schizophrenics. Dr. Kalish spent two years in monastic training in Asia. He lived at a Zen monastery in Japan, where he studied organic farming, Zen meditation, and the art of Zen archery under Harada Roshi. He also lived in a forest monastery in Thailand studying meditation and the transcription of Buddhist texts for Vipassana master Achan Buddadasa. He is a certified Alexander Technique teacher and trained for two years with Marion Rosen, founder of Rosen Method Bodywork.

Dr. Kalish is a very knowledgeable functional health care practitioner which you will know by reading his book because he tells you how good he is! He is an impressive self promoter.

He is able to take complex topics and make them understandable so if you want to learn a bit of nutritional biochemistry you may enjoy this book. The book is an easy read and has some good diagrams. It is not a long book, the margins are larger than usual, the type size is good size and there is extra space between each line. But if you have some health issues that you have been unable to get help with....you will not find any significant direction here. The conclusions to be drawn is that you need to become a patient of Dr. Kalish or one of practitioners he has trained.

Sadly, I conclude that the 5 star reviews are mostly from patients who think he is great, but they are not a reflection of the usefulness of the book. If you carefully read the comments from healthcare practitioners, either in the book or here...again they are not referring to the book. I personally found this book extremely frustrating is its lack of actionable information.

Waste of money unless you are a health novice. A good portion of the book is an explanation of what he thinks is the root cause of most bad health. There is a lengthy explanation of how stress is the cause of most illness and goes on to explain how stress affects the various body systems. Most of this is common knowledge if you have read a book or two on general health and diet. He does however, give numerous examples of how he has helped people in his practice with testing and treatment that was very specific to that individual. There is no method offered for the reader to use to improve his health other than meditating for stress relief, sleep well, and to eliminate the common digestive irritants which are gluten, soy, diary and sugar. He talks a great deal about testing which is necessary with his protocal but not available to the reader unless he finds a doctor sympathetic to this Method.

This book would be a great advertisement for his clinic or practice. It gives nothing substantive for the reader other than to find a doctor who might agree to testing as advised in this book and then come up with a protocal for the patient to actually implement with the doctors help. This was supposed to be a self-help book!

I read the book cover to cover and kept waiting for the PLAN..it never came. The book was chock full of physiology and science but it was way over the head of any lay person. The recommendations it did give with respect to diet were kind of "duh"..it is stuff we know anyway. I had seen Dr. Kalish on TV and was excited to read his book, but it was disappointing at best. I still don't know much more than I did before I read it. Waste of money.

I was looking for the "method", but he doesn't really go into it. This is not really helpful for someone trying to help themselves. It's just some theory about functional medicine. I'm not really sure who it's audience is supposed to be, seemed very general.

I purchased this book hoping to get the information I needed to help myself with my stress hormonal imbalances and menopausal hormonal imbalances. The book has a lot of interesting info, and it seems that Dr. Kalish knows what he's talking about. It took me about 45 minutes to an hour to read it. However, I felt very mislead. I was looking for specifics on which direction I should go, to possibly work with a doc who prescribes bio-identical hormones. I personally felt that the book was a 'tease' to taking his course. If you're looking for specifics, you're not getting that here. I guess you have to shell out $5,000 for the course, or try to find a practitioner which aren't widely available, and expensive when you find them! The practitioners I found did not get good patient reviews! I would not mind selling this book for $3.00 if anyone wants it just for reference.

Disspointing read considering witten by a Dr with a subtitle "Training for practitioners". Most of the book is based on generalizations without specific healing protocols or insights. It looks like a "cut and paste" book with no profound insights. If you've read at least a few natural medicine books, you'll know what i mean. Looks like this Dr jumped on the Functional Medicine bandwagon without really understanding the complexities of neurotransmitters...if he does know, he certainly doesn't share it in this big margin, double spaced lined book.

Anyone who has recovered from a serious illness knows that the road to recovery is a collaboration between the patient, the healer, and the ecosystem which surrounds both. In Dr. Kalish's new book: The Kalish Method: Healing the Body, Mapping the Mind, the reader is provided with clear and and simple explanations of why disease occurs, what tools can be used to assess an illness, and how to move towards optimal health. As stated on the cover, this book is for functional medicine practitioners, AND patients. As a certified nutritionist, I am constantly encountering clients who suffer from a breakdown of the Three Body Systems as explained by Dr. Kalish, and it has been enormously helpful to use the book as a tool to educate and to validate the importance of healthy eating, detoxification, and stress reduction. This book is not a self-help manual for the lay person, nor is it an all encompassing technical handbook for the health practitioner. Rather, it is a very useful bridge between the practitioner to his patient as difficult terms and concepts regarding diet and its effects on brain chemistry can be better understood and appreciated after reading this book.
