I found a misplaced copy of this book while grocery shopping right around the time I was finishing up the 2nd Kane Chronicles book with my sons(7 and 9)....I was beyond excited...but put it down after a quick scan through the pages deciding I would probably be buying it for myself and wasn't sure if my sons would be interested. I obsessed over this book for 2 days and ran back to the store and bought it(sorry Amazon...I was too impatient for shipping) My sons LOVE the Survival Guide, it gave us a chance to discuss the illustrations of the characters compared to what we imagined in our minds. And it is also nice to see how much they remember from the books(they were paying attention, not just dragging out bedtime..YAY!). They look through this book everyday. I just started reading the Percy Jackson series to them(while we patiently wait for the 3rd Kane Chronicles book), and they are using the Kane Chronicles Survival Guide to compare characters from the two series if they sound even the slightest bit similar. I will be ordering the survival guide for Percy Jackson as well.

Although I consider his books slightly overrated, Rick Riordan is, in my opinion, a fantastic writer for middle grade and teenage readers. However, when it comes to the spin-offs and guides of his bestselling series, I'm not so sure about their quality.

In the style of Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Ultimate Guide, The Kane Chronicles Survival Guide has a splendid cover: some very cool 3-D images that change when you look at them from a different angle as well as a magnetic clasp. The papers inside are of good quality. I'm pretty sure even the haters of The Kane Chronicles will admit that this book *looks* good.

But you know that old phrase to not judge a book by its cover? Well that's true here, because that content inside this book is lackluster. Most of the information presented in this "Survival Guide" is just basic info, rehashed into this new book. There are also lots of pretty boring character and plot summaries, which, if you really wanted to, could find on Wikipedia or something of the like. Some brief retellings of Egyptian myths are included as well, plus a tiny bit of Egyptian history. Most of the guide, though, has nothing new to tell us about Carter or Sadie, or even the world of The Kane Chronicles.

Even the art doesn't save the sub-par text. Antonio Javier Caparo, the series' illustrator, is just as great of an illustrator as Rick Riordan is of a writer, but there isn't much art by him in here, and most of the art is seen on the cover (remember, the images change, so there are 8 characters displayed on the cover). There's not that much quality art inside the book and even some of the art feels rehashed.

By now, if you're a die-hard fan of the series and reading this, you're probably thinking "But Rick Riordan wrote this guide! I've read everything by him and loved it. Why should this be any different? I'll love anything by him, including this guide! Right?" Wrong. This book was NOT WRITTEN BY RICK RIORDAN. This book was written by Mary-Jane Knight, as can be seen on this book's copyright page. I have no idea what Mr. Riordan thinks of these guides, but if I were him, I'd be pretty disappointed in my publisher for milking the cash cow.

Overall, I feel that this book is caught in a Catch-22: only the fans of the series will be drawn to reading this, but they will find the material to be mostly filler and nothing earth-shattering, ground-breaking, or even revealing. Meanwhile, non-fans of the series could get an introduction to the series in this survival guide, but I'm pretty sure they won't be drawn to this book like that.

Conclusion: If you must, as a Kane Chronicles fan, read this book, get it from your library. If you are thinking of buying this as a gift for a Kane Chronicles fan, don't, unless they're easily impressed by 100+ pages of colourful images. If you don't like Rick Riordan, don't buy this book. And if you like him, don't buy this book.

My 12 year old daughter is dictating this review to me. This book is great if you read the Kane Chronicles. It has fun tidbits in it , Some things I overlooked while reading the actual books and this book explained them. I would tell anyone to get this book.

The book has acurate and descent iterations of the story and the hard cover is in great condition. I did buy this used and the description was " like new " no issues with the book. Only to get the book and have the Cards missing from the inside front cover " not a huge deal but I like to have a complete set for my collection" and there are a few damaged pages that seemed as though they got wet and stuck together for a long time before being ripped apart again ruining the images on both pages.

I'm a big fan of the series here and knowing that Rick didn't write this guide, I still buy it just because I like it. After getting the book, i felt bad. The cover was poorly made. It wasn't even fit like Percy's ultimate guide. I won't be back to US in 6months and I have to have this.
They should provide a better product image, not just a front and back but side too.

Like Percy Jackson and the Olympians, the world of egyptian mythology is just as grand! Because I couldn't find this product anywhere, where I live, I ordered it on Amazon. Surprisingly, it came before the estimated delivery date, which I was very happy about! The world of mythologies (Egyptian and Greek) is wonderful! And the author of these fantastic books (Rick Riordan) is just as amazing! I recommend Rick Riordan books to anyone!
