5.0 out of 5 stars Joan is "THE KEY"! April 27, 2009
Format:Vinyl
What I find amazing is the fact that all too many times "The Suits" who make the decisions in the music business make their decision and we have to abide by it. This title by Joan Armatrading has been deleted for many years and HOW wrong a decision that was and is! There are fantastic songs on here. From her rocking side to her heartbreakingly aching songs of loss, of love.
Someone rescind the error the idiot who made that decision made and reintroduce a true treasure. The songs may not be, every one a winner for everyone, but if you don't find one that stands out to you, I'll bite the vinyl!

4.0 out of 5 stars A Key To A New Age August 15, 2003
Format:Audio CD
Knowing some of Joan Armatrading's earlier, softer work
"The Key" is actually a pleasant surprise.Joan's giant voice was
always very well suited to rock 'n roll and this delivers many
exciting tracks in that vein from "(I Love It When You) Call me
Names","Drop The Pilot",the tital track,"The Dealer" and "Bad Habits".But some very well-constructed modern pop songs
such as "Foolish Pride",'What Do Boys Dream" and "I Love My Baby" also make a point for Armatrading's many faces and the albums other tracks offer many unique conbinations in between. Not bad!

5.0 out of 5 stars A very good album with a touch of the 80's March 20, 2003
Format:Audio CD
I love her voice since I heard it. The best impression I still have from "The Key Tour". I met her in Berlin at the concert. I found myself beneath a lot of fans but I was a newcomer because the several hitsingles who came out of this record. "Drop the pilot" had the highest position for Joan in West-Germany. (We were in the beginning of the 80's.) The more You listen to this music the better it is, a good relaxation from the daily routines. Get it if You can! It's difficult. Pity!

5.0 out of 5 stars 30 years on and still strong November 14, 2013
Format:MP3 Music
Back in 1983 when it was originally released The Key was the first CD I ever purchased. It's still one of my favorites. Emotionally charged lyrics and stongly supporting melodies and rhythms make this timeless music. The first two cuts are my favorites: call me names and foolish pride, though I like every cut.

Joan Armatrading's The Key is music that stands the test of time - 30 years on and still strong. I think 5 Stars are earned for sure.

2.0 out of 5 stars I do like Joan Armatrading but not this album October 31, 2012
By Frysian
Format:Audio CD
I have listened to many Joan Armatrading recordings and I have many in my possession including this one, but it gives me no pleasure. "The Key" is to me a disappointing album. The sound is too rocky and the emotions don't fit in. This album sounds as if it had to be made to fulfil some contractual need and the creative spark was out of reach. The musical repetitions in each song add up to a dull monotone "total". The only song that matters is "Everybody gotta know" (track 5). Joan is famous and successful with her emotional strength and appeal in her songs, but this album is, with a few exceptions, no example. Her strength and appeal lies in her "vulnerability" not in "rocking the place". So is the "Game of love" a poor imitation of the sound of The Pretenders. But Joan lacks the 'metallic' voice of a Chrissy Hines. Therefore it is a poorly produced album which does not do credit to her talents. It is of course also possible that the previous success she had prior to this album has lead to some "bad habits".
