Editorial Reviews

- IMPORT FROM SOUTH KOREA - LANGUAGE: ENGLISH, SPANISH (DUBBED) - SUBTITLES: KOREAN, PORTUGUESE, or NONE - (NO ENGLISH SUBTITLE) - NTSC ALL REGIONS - COLORS - During World War II, tug boats conduct what are called salvage missions - picking up disabled ships. Not well equipped with weaponry, the tugs are sitting ducks for enemy fire. As such, the crew working the tugs have precarious lives, many with deep seated emotional problems. Before the Americans join the war, ex-American military man David Ross is assigned to captain a tug for the British military. He is shown the ropes by an old friend, Captain Chris Ford. Chris currently shares a flat with a young beautiful Italian-Swiss woman named Stella, who came with the flat and who lives a reclusive life there. Chris is the latest in a long line of tug boat captains who have lived there, each who has found another person to take over the flat and the associated looking after of Stella if anything is to happen to him. That person is given a key to the flat, the key only to be used if needed. The first in the series was Phillip Westerby, to who Stella was to be married before Phillip was killed. Chris, who in turn now loves Stella himself and wants to marry her, asks David to be the next in line. David reluctantly agrees. As David learns the pressures associated with his work, he begins also to understand the emotional turmoil that Stella has gone through, which changes his opinion about "the key". Stella's view of the key also changes with David.

At 115 minutes the DVD is 9 minutes shorter that the "happy ending" videotape I own, and I haven't compared them one after another. The downbeat ending differs from the one I remember seeing in a test screening in 1958, which I described in my review of the videotape, but is true to its spirit. The technical quality of the DVD is excellent, and the action is even more gripping in my old age.

This is a must for anyone who enjoys rare movies about world war two. It is a little know story of British Navy rescue tugs, that go out to rescue and bring back transport ships wounded by U-boats. All the while being attacked by the U-boats guns. Lots of action and some great acting by a great cast

We were really looking forward to having a professional copy of the movie. The movie was great until the end where there were scenes missing so the movie seem really stupid and was a real disappointment. We knew the scenes were missing because it is a favorite movie of ours. We sent the DVD back and are still looking for a descent release of this terrific film.
