Book Description

The Kill - Book One of the Trilogy

The son of the most ruthless Mafia boss in eastern Canada is killed, and the father wants revenge.
Darwin Kostas is a law-abiding Canadian, a writer with a new bride and a long list of phobias. His fear of the dark keeps him inside after the sun goes down. He also suffers from aichmophobia, an irrational fear of sharp and pointed objects. If confronted with a knife or a needle, his fear manifests as an out-of-control rage.
He's also the man who accidentally killed the heir to the Fuccini syndicate.
When the newlyweds honeymoon in Rome, a hit team follows. They keep waving things at Darwin--pointy things, like knives. He just can't control himself when that happens, and accidentally kills a few more 'made men.' The Mafia believes Darwin is a trained killer, hired to take them out, and declare all-out war on the neurotic novelist.
Darwin returns to Toronto, but the hits keep coming, the FBI closes in, and a local biker gang offers Darwin their help.
Darwin just wants to be left alone with a light on.

The Mafia Trilogy Books in order:

1. The Kill
2. The Blade
3. The Scythe

Editorial Reviews

Review

"'The Kill' is a fast-paced action thriller with a unique lead character. Overall, I found the writing, including narrative and dialog, to be crisp. It's well-written and keeps the reader on the edge of the seat, turning pages." -Editor, Robb Grindstaff

"I cannot believe how good this was. The writing is sound. The story is fantastic. I actually see this novel as a movie. This is one of his best to date." -Author Laura Roberts

5.0 out of 5 stars The Kill February 9, 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I just recently started reading books by Jonas Saul. Boy was I missing out. I started with the Sarah Robert series and moved on to everything else that Jonas has witten. I was lucky enough to receive a free copy of THE KILL from Jonas. After two days of reading I am done. Disappointed only by the fact that I reached the end. Constant action and suspense. As with the other series that Jonas has written it kept me attached the entire time. I would recommend this and any other books that Jonas publishes. Even though I received a free copy of this book for review, I also purchased it online from Amazon. If you have not read this author before START. You don't know what you are missing.

1.0 out of 5 stars Good potential, but misses the mark--spoilers August 19, 2012
Format:Paperback
This novel has a lot of potential. The idea of a man with devastating phobias rising up to fight the mob is an exciting idea. However, the author handles it poorly.

The novel begins with the death of the heir apparent of a mob family. This death is caused by the hero of the novel, Darwin, although the reader does not know this yet. The problem is, Darwin has so many phobias that reasonably he should not have been anywhere near the massacre that Vincenzo Fuccini has just survived. Darwin is afraid of the dark and it is dark outside. The author suggests that Darwin braved the dark to attend a group therapy session he thought was going on in an abandoned airplane hangar outside of Toronto. Okay, reasonable enough. However, why would a therapy session be held in such a remote area? And didn't Darwin see the burning vehicles, the dead bodies, and the other evidence of the massacre before he got close enough to kill Vincenzo? Didn't he hear gunshots? Who in their right mind would drive toward gunshots? Especially when a bullet has just gone through his windshield. I'm sorry, but I am sure even a frightened man can tell the difference between a bullet in his windshield and a pebble. And who would stop once reaching this massacre, especially after just running down an armed man? Especially a man with phobias.

As the novel continues, the reader meets Darwin's new wife, Rosina. Rosina is a beautiful, simple city girl. Rosina believes her new husband to be a quiet, mild-mannered writer. Rosina supposedly does not know the mob is after her new husband until she boards a plane for Greece and reads in a letter that her man is sending her to Greece alone to protect her. There does not appear to be further explanation. So what does she do?

3.0 out of 5 stars Too much to believe July 8, 2012

I like to see what others think.
Most liked this book. I found it amusing, but unbelievable.
The hero (who in real life is an author) suddenly takes on the mob and kills all the hit men. How? He has a phobia that sends him into a rage.
Sorry, after he bumps off about 5 hit men, I ran out of disbelief.
Even the FBI is in on it, and he gets them too.

Now, the good part: It was free, and it was a one day read.
Not enough for a glowing review.

Please authors, I'm dying for a great read. I hate writing bad reviews.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Kill - Keeps You on The Edge of Your Seat! February 26, 2012
Format:Paperback
I recently discovered Jonas Saul and am now up-to-date on all of his books! I love suspense, adventures, surprises and thrillers, and this book meets all of those criterion. An innocent wrong turn ends up involving the mob and a nightmare of a honeymoon. It is hard to put this book down. If you haven't read the rest of Mr. Saul's books, do it now. You won't be disappointed! As an aside, Mr. Saul not only writes well, he is super to his fans!

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Jonas Saul winner April 13, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I started reading Jonas Saul's Sarah Roberts series and quickly became a fan. With his creation of Darwin, a simple guy who got into things way over his head, he has another great character that I was rooting for. Along with the non-stop action of Darwin against the Mafia, there is humor here and there and something to give rise to a smile. Through adversity we see Darwin's simple thoughts on something as mediocre as Starbucks. I look forward to reading another Jonas Saul book and perhaps find Darwin in one of those..

4.0 out of 5 stars Organized crime like you probably never imagined it. November 17, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I am an American and think of my Canadian neighbors as among the most fair, send nicest people on the planet. This book acknowledges that.
Okay so you have an Italian mob out of Toronto. A normal (well close anyway) young Canadian writer accidentally runs over and kills the Son's dirt bag of a son. What follows is mafia revenge/blood feud. Nothing unusual there. Young Canadian destroys mafia family. Wait! What? Canadian! How? The answer is what makes this book. Paul's answer its the author's strength. I thought some of the mafia violence was over the top. This is part of a trilogy which I intend to read, in fact already have begun #2.
