From the Author

Dear Reader,

I am your biggest fan.  Without you--your passion to read, your love of story and your desire to escape into a place created on a tip of a pen held with the same passion, love and desire--the world would be imbalanced.

Perhaps your next journey will be engrossed amidst the pages of my novel, The King of Egypt, where I will send you into an ancient time and hopefully entice you to forget where you really are.  I caution your heart and warn that I plot to capture your want for more.  But, through it all, my greatest wish is that every moment you graciously gift your eyes across my words, I have given you something worthy in return.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book for the beach May 13, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
If you enjoy historical fiction and are looking for a book for the summer, then I highly recommend The King of Egypt. Lush, exciting, and filled with action, the story of Tigris and Euphrates is well-written and filled with fascinating characters.

Makins has the gift of taking figures from history and turning them into living, breathing people that the reader cares about. And the descriptions are amazing - of the battles, of the clothes and food, and of Egypt itself.

This is a nice long book, too. When I'm on vacation I want to read a book that sucks me in for a long stay in a foreign culture or different time, and The King of Egypt does just that.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hopeful for a Sequel!!! August 6, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
I love this novel, it was such a great read!

It felt as though I knew the characters, and found myself at some times completely lost in the story... I even got emotional!

History is something I have great interest in and if you know anything about ancient Egypt you will find that the author did her research to make sure that the plot coincided with the state of Egypt at that time which made the story that much more real.

I was sad to come closer to the end of the book, I didn't want it to end! It became such a page turner that I found myself addicted to knowing what was going to happen next and actually contemplating on pacing myself so that I didn't read it too fast... That didn't happen. I couldn't put the book down!

Personally, I also took out of the story a few life lessons as well about pride and the decisions we make in our relationships with others.

Get lost in this book if you can allow yourself to, you'll be happy you did.

Fingers crossed for a sequel!

5.0 out of 5 stars An Epic Adventure set in Ancient Egypt May 15, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This imaginative historical fiction novel takes you back to ancient Egypt, and does so in a very rich and luxurious manner.

The story is about an Egyptian Pharaoh who is uniquely a woman--the only female pharaoh at this point in history. Named Tigris after the mighty river, she is two years into her reign and having been trained for this position since birth, she is dedicated in body and soul to her divine calling as Ra's representative ruler. Tigris has everything in her life, power, wealth, luxury, everything but love. She is not willing to marry, as she fears a marriage would dilute her power and make her 'Queen' of Egypt, subject to a King. This was the same dilemma Queen Elizabeth I faced in real life in 16th century England, as being a woman thrust into a man's role made her councilors and subjects question her ability to rule competently. In this story, Tigris faces similar obstacles. In response, Tigris has dedicated her life to making herself strong through hard physical training as a warrior and by hardening her heart. She has everything under control, or so she believes.

When a rebel upstart begins to gain favor in remote regions and builds an army, claiming he is the rightful King of Egypt, Tigris faces her most difficult challenge yet as Pharaoh. Everything begins to slowly unravel around her, as trusted advisers and even family loyalties waver. As secrets are revealed, Tigris is forced to question everything she believed in, even her god-given right to rule Egypt, as it appears this rebel may indeed have a legitimate claim to the throne. Her adversary should be her hated enemy, but upon meeting him, she is deeply affected by this beguiling warrior, and secretly attracted to him despite her determination to hate him.

Really good story. Awesome love story. Had me wanting more!! Would definitely recommend this book to others. Definitely not your typical lobe story, would have been nice of some things hapennned differently, but that would have been too cliche.

5.0 out of 5 stars I couldn't put this book down! September 18, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
One of the hallmarks of J.J Makins work is her examination of the byways of human psychology, including the twisty roads and detailed erotic expressions.

I became obsessed with the history Egypt. As I read on, It's fair to say that I began losing touch with reality. Through Tigris's many endeavors, it was the suspension right at the beginning that had me hooked.

The story opens with a boy, secrets and betrayal fueled by jealousy and innuendo. He can't escape the possibility that who he is, justified or not, puts the lives of thousands at risk.

A messenger contemplates what he has just heard and what this will mean for King Tigris. He can't shake off the harsh, cheerless landscape he has traversed en route to the castle.

A book of almost infinite detail. Every scene, every character, every emotional transaction draws weight and credibility to this writers powers of observation.

This is a novel about influence, about art, about politics, about duty, about truth and, of course, about secrecy. But in the end, it's a book about love.

I am waiting for a sequel OR prequel!

The storyline was good. I don't think the author captured the reader's imagination all that well. The historical background was well researched.

More About the Author

Would you believe I am incarnate of Nitiqreti from Ancient Egypt and I've come here to put the story straight! Herodotus--who does he think he is?!

Okay, I wouldn't believe that either. I was born in Toronto, Canada. THE KING OF EGYPT is my first novel so I have not much yet to claim. But, I am working on it and I am working on bringing you--the reader (who I am a fan of)--more fabulous tales.
Fine. You be the judge....
