I purchased "The Kings Passengers" to facilitate my family ancestry research. I have found it to be very useful in resolving information about a number of my early ancestors in colonial Virginia and Maryland, and look forward to using it as a vital tool in my kit!

If you have poor 17th and 18th century English ancestors in Virginia or Maryland, they may have come over as one of the 50,000 "King's 7 Year Passengers." During the 1600-1775, England periodically cleared its jails of criminals and sent them primarily to Maryland and Virginia to provide the needed unskilled labor. These 'criminals' were usually guilty of only petty theft but that carried the punishment of either hanging or transportation to the colonies for 7 or 14 years hard labor. This book provides valuable insight into 'transportation' and helps you identify ancestors who came over as convicts. This book is not as extensive ass Coldham's nine volume set but it may be all that you need.

As an amateur genealogist, this book was helpful. The names, places and dates listed sent me in new directions in my search for family ties. Of course, it is just a list of names, so anyone wanting more detail will have to really delve. Fortunately, that's the part I like!

I have not read this book nor have I read a earlier book on this same subject. I was shocked to see that the author had added a note to my Irish ancestor's Ancestry.com page that indicated my ancestor was one of many Irish forced to come to the colonies against his will because he had been convicted of something! I am curious to read the book he is supposedly mentioned in, but it is $50.00! Long story short, my ancestor who came here with his wife and two sons from Londonderry, Ireland did very well for themselves in Virginia after having come ashore in Newcastle, Deleware. Now am am even more curious as to what happened! Can't this and the other book be available on Kindle so they will be less expensive?
