Poppy's crazy, wild, fun, but she also falls for guys a little too quickly, and bruises a little to hard. Her way of dealing with things is via songs. She writes songs about her heartbreak, and posts them on YouTube. Her latest song, The Kiss Of, is a huge hit, scoring thousands of views and fans and admirers, and seemingly overnight Poppy becomes a YouTube sensation. And the attention of the Academy of Lies, a band group. Soon, she's writing more lyrics, recognized and called out on the street, and dating Ty, a member of the Academy of Lies.
The Kiss Off is a very fast-paced, quirky story. The author quite accurately portrays teenagers, and Poppy's narrative was hilarious and fun to read. It also really shows how big of an impact social media and the internet can have on us now, and has that whole `moral of the story' thing going on not necessarily forbidding one against things like sexting and social media, but more like it's warning them about the after-effects. Poppy's tale seems almost cautionary and the story to teach-ish at times, though, which I feel really breaks up the whole fun and quirky atmosphere.
I would've liked to see more of Poppy and her friends just doing the regular things - gossiping, hanging out, at school, etc - instead of reading about Poppy obsessing over her crush(es), which was what was going on in the book the majority of the time. I kind of liked Mads's character - equally quirky, outgoing, and fun, but she didn't get as much page time as I had hoped.Read more ›
You didn't say why,
but I am not gonna cry
Cos baby this is your Kiss Off.
You cheated on me,
But I'll get even you see,
I am telling you to just Kiss Off "
Poppy yes that is her name is your average teenager but when her boyfriend breaks up with her and starts dating her friend Poppy decides to take revenge by writing and singing a song about it-Kiss off.It turns out that she becomes an overnight YouTube sensation and this local band asks to make her song their one.
Bonus points --the lead singer is a hot guy that Poppy met by accident while going home from school. After the song goes viral and she catapults the local band to stardom everything starts to become overwhelming. Will she give this guy a chance or will she return to her boyfriend when she finds out he still has feelings for her ....??
PS : Sarah did a wonderful job in creating a make-believe 'Hollywood' world surrounding Poppy, Tyler, and their friends. It's easy to envision the environment she created as well as taking into account that while this is just a story, this sort of thing happens often in the real world. I'm officially a fan of Sarah's and look forward to reading more of her work soon. The Kiss Off is a DEFINITE MUST READ !!
Now as for the actual novel itself. It's again not my normal cup of tea. Neither, fantasy, paranormal, or dystopian, it still caught my eye. What drew me into reading this book was the slight nostalgia I felt when reading the blurb. Like the cover, it reminded me of my Jr. High/ High School Days. So, I figured what the heck, let's give it a go! I'm pleased to say my green light didn't result in a crash and burn.
The Kiss Off not only has a catchy title but also a darn good plot. It's story sucked me in from the get-go and I pretty much enjoyed the whole ride with only a few eyebrow raising issues.
So before I move on to those issues, here's what's good about The Kiss Off:
The Chracters....are real. I'm big about believable characters and well, Billington did good job with these. Her character's are not portrayed as perfect, they are far from it. They make major mistakes and only later do they learn from them. Such an occurrence is called growth.
As for the plot, it's believable. Billington does a upstanding job at building the whole insta fandom in this book, making things snowball just as they would in real life. Her descriptions were simplistic but it set the right tone for the book, bettering the story pacing for me. What's more is though this book may seem like just a nice fluffy romance, I like the the author added a touch of seriousness in the growing climax of this book in the guise of sexting. (No Spoilers, sorry gonna have to read it to know what I'm talking about!)
So what did make my eyebrows pop up?Read more ›
