The Kite Runner Graphic Novel is an inspiring graphic novel written by Khaled Hosseini and illustrated by Fabio Celoni and Mirka Andolfo. It tells of life in modern Afghanistan and the main characters, Amir and his father's adjustment to life in the United States. It's an inspiring story of war and survival. As a sheltered American, I do not know enough about Afghanistan, Russia, and the many other nations that have been involved in wars around the world for many years. This graphic novel teaches about the lives of everyday people during war. The novel is a powerful story just like the movie. I think the graphic novel is good for mature teens and adults. Most kids and adults like to read comic books, and the pictures make the action come to life. The pictures help you visualize the story, the clothing, and the customs. The artwork is appealing and has clear pictures and good colors. Warning- the story is for mature audiences; some of the scenes are very disturbing and inappropriate for young children. The story includes rape and forcing a boy to dress like a girl and dance. The story also contains some violence, blood, and profanity. Sometimes the story is disgusting and sometimes it is heart-warming. The Kite Runner Graphic Novel is a sad and happy story about family relationships during war and peace. I hope this review helped you decide if you want to read it.

I saw this in my college's library, and I sat there and read through the whole thing; it made me want to re-read the Kite Runner novel, which I ended up doing. The graphic novel covers all the main points in the book and is just so beautiful I love seeing the visual come to life it's better than the movie! haha

Another book that hardly needs a rave review. Nevertheless, it was wonderful and educational. More people should read books like this, especially following 9/11. This is an important read for anyone who bears unjust prejudices against Middle Easterners. A few do not define a culture. War adversely affects those who live where its fought.

I read the book long before I bought the graphic version. The idea of a visual review of the book had caught my interest however, and I must say while it did allow me to recall the essence of the story, I would never know what I missed had I not read the novel first. The true drama and trauma cannot be illustrated effectively with pictures and not be considered pornographic. In its favor, the graphic novel was a fast read, well-done and the artwork displayed the emotions of the characters quite well.

The novel that this graphic novel is based on is worthy of all the accolades it has received. It is based on the life of a boy born in Afghanistan before the Soviets invaded in support of their communist clients. Flying kites is a serious competitive sport in Afghanistan with the goal being to snap the string of your opponents.
Amir is twelve years old and very badly wants to win the local kite-fighting tournament. With the help and encouragement of his loyal friend Hassan, Amir manages to win. This is the high point of Hassan's life as a very bad thing happens to him shortly after the tournament. Even though Amir had nothing to do with it, their friendship is effectively over.
Later, when the Russians invade, Amir and his father flee the country and while they are on that journey Amir learns the meaning of courage from his father. As he ages, becomes a novelist and gets married, Amir still has emotional ties to Afghanistan and he travels back to the country even though the Taliban is now in charge and it is very dangerous for him to be in that part of the world. Amir channels the courage of his father to complete the task he has set out to do and manages to return to the United States.
This is a powerful graphic novel, the harshness and brutality of the Taliban is presented in a very graphic manner. Despite their professed pureness, there is corruption in the Taliban that must be negotiated around. It is a demonstration of the tragedy that is Afghanistan, a country that has seen nearly continuous warfare for over thirty years.

The Kite Runner gives us a look into Afghanistan both before and after the fall of the government.
We see the story through the eyes of two young boys growing up there, two very different boys or so they think.
Amir has grown up among wealth and privilege, enjoying the status his father holds, Hassan is the son of the servant and confidant of his father. The two boys are inseparable, spending time with Amir reading Hassan and telling him of the stories he writes,as well as flying kites to see how can cut the most and running after the fallen kite. The two are all most like brothers, until that day! That day their was a shift in the two boys relationship, a shift that high lighted the differences.
It was not until years, decades later really that Amir learns the truth, how not so different they were.

This was an excellent story and the illustrations are great. Though the story is graphic it is a story of culture and of life in Afghanistan. The Kite Runner is often on the reading list for high school students and rightly so. Though a graphic novel this is a good telling of the novel and told in a way that will interest and captivate the hard or reluctant reader.
