Contemporary Romance - THE KNIGHT AND MAGGIE'S BABY Book 3 of Fate with a Helping Hand

Sometimes fate needs a little help…

Billionaire, Jonah Wallace knows what it’s like to grow up without love. Despite having more money than the Queen of England, his childhood was cold and stale as he grew up in boarding schools. He’s dedicated his life to helping homeless and displaced children find the love and support they need by creating the Haven House Foundation, work that resulted in him being Knighted by the Queen.

Now that he’s living in America, his work is going along just fine…until his grandfather gives fate a little nudge by insisting he take a wife before he can inherit.

Coffee shop owner, Maggie Bonelli, is pregnant and the baby’s dad has gone AWOL. She knows too well the pain of growing up without a daddy. So when Jonah Wallace comes into her shop proposing marriage for a year, she takes him up on his offer, even if it’s only for a year. Live in a mansion and give her baby a name and a daddy to call his/her own. But can they keep their perfect arraignment strictly business…or will fate’s helping hand bring them love at last?

“Don't you think you're rushing things just a tad?” She lifted her hand and pinched her index finger and thumb together for emphasis.

“I'll admit my proposal is a bit abrupt,” he stammered.

“A bit?”

“We've only known each other--”

“Forty-five minutes tops,” she blurted out. “Are you out of your mind?”

Her tone was incredulous. And he really didn't blame Maggie if she thought he was nuts. He felt nuts. Desperate, too. But he found himself defending his proposal.

“Quite possibly. But you see, that’s exactly my point. I have a bit of a time-crunch here, and it seems as though--”

Maggie folded her arms across her chest. “How silly of me. Here I thought you were sweeping me off my feet.”

He shook his head with a chuckle. “I do sound mad, don’t I?”

“Recognition is the first step toward recovery.”

Something rumbled up from deep inside him. Jonah laughed at himself, this disastrous day, and the absurd situation he'd been forced into by his grandfather. It felt good to laugh. That in itself was incredibly surprising, considering he hadn't managed to do much laughing at all since he'd learned of the impending plans for Wiltshire.

He peered at Maggie through moisture filled eyes. She wasn't laughing. But she was incredibly beautiful. Her sapphire eyes sparkled when she teased him. There were small freckles sprinkled across her nose that looked adorable with the sun shining on her creamy skin.

When she looked at him the way she was right now, it didn't seem like such a crazy idea to marry her. At least not for the reasons he was proposing. He hadn't given it a second thought. And yet, now he realized just how ridiculous he looked from her eyes.

“I'm not making a pass at you. Truly, I'm not.”

“You just asked me to marry you.”

“I'm asking for your help.”

His lips tilted up to one side. “Again.”

Maggie took two steps down the stairs until they were both standing at eye level. “Forget the phone call, the nice air conditioned ride in the limo, the coffee, the pie—”

“Which by the way was truly inspiring,” he interjected. “If I didn’t already tell you that.”

“You did. You don't even know me. You’re asking a total stranger to marry you.”

He shrugged. “I know that. But I know you make me laugh.”

“So that's all it takes for a happy marriage? Bet we could make a killing with that book.”

“I sound delusional,” he said. “Even to my own ears, which is pretty scary.”

He was delusi

5.0 out of 5 stars BookWhisperer Favorite August 29, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
An incredibly heartwarming story, and the picture perfect happily ever after. Maggie is a young woman with a problem. From a family legacy of survival without men; she is no stranger to hard work and dedication. At twenty four, pregnant and alone she knows that the future will be a struggle. Fate lands Jonah Wallace in her coffee shop one late afternoon after his fiancé leaves him the day of the wedding. Let not get hung up on the fact that their wedding was a ruse for him to be able to ensure his ownership of the family heritage. After learning his Grandfather's plans to sell the family land; he was furious to discover the stipulation that he must marry for the length of a year in order to be eligible for the ownership. Determined not to lose the property he suggests that he and Maggie marry for the year. Maggie being a very realistic and moralistic character was mortified to think about marrying for money, but after some thought she had found one thing that he might be able to provide that would make this sacrifice with it. Being well experienced in living without a father, Maggie is none too familiar with the cruelty of children. So, just maybe in exchange for this one favor Jonah could offer her child the chance to feel like she is a part of something bigger. While, she knows that they will never be a family, and this arrangement is only for the length of a year; she also knows that no matter the name would offer her child some much more than she could ever hope for. This was an incredible story about love and devotion. Even prior to the mountain of emotions that readers feel through Jonah and Maggie; a mother loves for her child could be no greater. This was a heartfelt and emotional read. Read more ›

4.0 out of 5 stars enjoyable read September 12, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Although I don't read many contemporary novels, I am glad I bought this one. Warm. Witty. The type of modern day Cinderella story that has you rooting for the heroine to win her prince. These characters were the kind of people I could gladly have as friends---and I did! For at least one night as I read their heartwarming story.

3.0 out of 5 stars HEA with a real storyline. May 5, 2013

I enjoyed the Knight and Maggie's Baby because Lisa Mondello showed that an author can write fantasy storylines but make them original. This story is a happily ever after tale if ever there was one but it is heavy on storyline with well written dramatic twists. I gave this book three stars because of Mondello's achievement of writing what turned out to be an incredibly modern adult, romance in an at times outdated juvenile theme of HEA fantasy. Mondello created a surprisingly deep love connection between Maggie and Jonah whose first encounter is a great opening scene of a chance meeting.I liked the fact that their relationship started out slow with them as friendly.Even though I typically do not read these types of romance novels I found the author's slower approach to romance in this book refreshing because when the two lovers come together the reader is given a more meaningful experience. Yes this book is a bit of fantasy, saved by a handsome prince but isn't that why a lot of us still read romance novels. However Maggie's character is not the typical damsel but a modern woman who does her best in a not so ideal situation. She is intent on not losing her heart to the royally wealthy Jonah, who despite his heart's disconnect is falling for her too. All around solidly written novel though I would have liked more backstory and supporting character development.

5.0 out of 5 stars From Knight to Daddy... October 20, 2011

The Knight and Maggie's Baby by Lisa Mondello
Book 3 in Fate With a Helping Hand Series
Jonah wanted to save his childhood home and the catch was to be married for one year so his Grandfather would not sell it. That is what led him to make an arrangement with his secretary, Catherine, for a pretend marriage for only one year. Only she bolted at the last minute.

Jonah had money and everything materialistic but he had an emptiness that he could not identify until he met Maggie Bonelli. Going into her coffee shop to use the phone after being left at the altar was quite humbling. Dressed in his tux, his building across the street but no keys to enter it and no employee's working because he gave them off, he felt like a thirteen year old once again. The beautiful woman gave him coffee and pie and conversation. He really did not want to leave her company, after calling Michael to come and get him, he was glad when she accepted a ride home in his limo with him. And before he knew it he was asking her to marry him.

Maggie's mother, Rhonda, could not believe she had turned the handsome millionaire away . With a baby on the way and the Keith washing his hands of her, Rhonda thought it was an opportunity to give her baby more than she was able to give Maggie. She felt content in her life though. She had the love of her mother and before her grandma had passed on some months ago, she had her love and now she had Grandma's coffee shop as the reminder of her childhood. As she reconsidered though, Maggie knew that by allowing Jonah to give her baby his name, it would save her child much grief in the future.

Can a man with everything the world had to offer but never had the love he wanted from his parents and a woman who had nothing and yet was rich for having the love of her mother and grandmother find a happiness together? This was a really touching story.

*Mild sexual situations and language.

This was a sweet story although I did get frustrated with Maggie refusing to accept anything for the baby from the hero. I've read it more than once which is the acid test for me.

As far as romances go, it was pretty much your average read. I mainly picked it up because a knight seemed pretty romantic, but it's barely mentioned in the book. Read more
