Review

ForeWord Clarion -
"Composed of the finest ingredients, John R. Gabourel's The Knight and the Serpent is a Norman myth brought to life with courtly intrigue, generations of betrayal, and salvation. The intense research lends his narration an authority often lacking in fantasy novels, allowing readers to be engaged to a deeper level."

Kirkus Indie -
"Any reader looking for a quick, easy read brimming with violence and romance will be satisfied with Gabourel's work... its eagerness and heart rewards its audience in the end. Gabourel's tale maintains an overall healthy balance of action and reflection. A legend of the Middle Ages bound to please most readers."

Midwest Book Review -
"The Knight & The Serpent is quite the spin of betrayal and romance, very much recommended reading."

Set in Medieval times, this is a book which stretches the tolerance of the reader regarding the behavior and character development of Medieval people. The story reads like an accident waiting to happen. It isn't that the novel is not replete with interesting and engaging writing. It is. I enjoyed the setting, the action, the detail -- all were intriguing. The plot is the area where credibility is stretched. To give some fairness to the author, the story is based on a Medieval legend unearthed and expounded upon by one of the author's ancestors in an earlier book. So, yes, the plot may have been authentic - just a little difficult to bring into the modern mind. Perhaps, the fault lies with me as a twenty-first century reader. All in all, it is worth the read (just keep a tolerant and open mind).

This book offers a vivid glimpse into the lives of historical persons. Yet this story is so much more than just history. The characters are complex. The author does a wonderful job of blending legend, history and fantasy. This is not a short book, yet I read it in one day.

I loved this book. It has pathos, love, evil, mystery and exquisite attention to detail. I'm not a medieval buff, but I learned a lot about the trappings of the times, architecture, battle strategies and the harsh ways of life. The writer presents the passions of the key characters in a way that is gripping in its complexity. And, there's plenty in it for the mystery fan as well as for those who enjoy a tinge of the unexplained.

I couldn't put it down! An amazing mix of Star Wars religion and morality underlain with historical facts, places and accounts. The author has done an extraordinary job of captivating the reader and displaying the human faults, flaws , heroism and justice with just the perfect mix of yesterday, today and tomorrow.

The Knight and the Serpent is a delightfully written tale in the times of knights and castle. The richly developed characters experience deep love, hatred, rivalry, great sin and redemption. The twist, turns and surprises will keep you reading. I finished the book in two days. The author's use of richly descriptive and vivid language is a delight to the imagination. The story was full of complex relationships, choices and consequences. The author clearly researched the time period lending great authenticity to the book. When you read this tale, expect the unexpected. A great read for all ages. The rich vocabulary used by the author makes is a particulary great read for high school students.
