Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

This is the first in a series of source-books for Wild West role-players, designed to be easily adapted to today's most popular RPGs.

From the Author

This book contains information on over 80 guns, plus prices for ammunition, holsters, sights, and other essential gear. Guns are arranged chronologically (from 1849 to the mid 1890's), so if you're running a campaign in the 1870's, for instance, you can turn to the appropriate chapter and use all the guns from that page forward. Ratings include not only the essentials of range, draw speed, price, and rate-of-fire, but also concealment, reliability, quirks, and re-loading time.

This is a great book for anyone who is interested in the Old West and wants the basics on the typical firearms of the period. There are a lot of pictures including both the typical and the unusual. For people into roleplaying in the old west, this is really an essential book (especially Boot Hill players). There is a general rating system so that a player will know how each weapon stacks up against the others. Stats include reloading, speed, range, damage, drawing speed, and reliability. There's also a list of likely quirks that would accompany different models. From a historical perspective, it includes the dates after which a weapon was available and typical difficulties in using it. Good information on ammo and the difficulty of weapons before mass production became reliable. There's also a section on typical holsters of the era. HOwever, the real gem is the section on gunfights. The author interviews three police officers who have survived gun battles. This section really provides insights into the psychology of gun battles and is a must for anyone who has an interest in this sort of thing. Overall, a neatly packaged product. The only draw back is that I wish it was longer.

This is a FANTASTIC resource if you're into playing Western games like GUTSHOT, Rules With No Name, Desperado, Shady Gulch, or even Six Gun Sound. It has a lot of info about range, accuracy, price, and availability. If you want to add some accuracy to your Western game, this is DEFINITELY a book to buy!
It also has a lot of use in games set in the Victorian age, like TERRA INCOGNITA or CALL OF CTHULHU! Keep in mind, those games are set in the same time period, just in different locations. If you'd like a gun-slinging cowboy to show up in London (say, to look into those dreadful Whitechaple murders), this book will be an invaluable tool.

Whether you're running a straight Wild West game or Deadlands-style fantasy this book is invaluable. Exhaustive and informative, it contains information on an enormous variety of firearms throughout the 19th century, including year of manufacture, ammo, price, etc. The book also utilizes generic statistics for each gun that are easy to translate to your RPG system of choice. It also includes a section on the realities of firearms combat that may puncture a few of your preconceptions. Even if you're not a roleplayer, this book is entertaining and highly informative.

Basically, if you're a Wild West gamer or enthusiast you need this book...you just don't know it yet!
