Book Description

“Remember this: you have seventy-two hours to do the deed and not a moment longer. Cut her throat and remove her heart. That, my girl, is the only way to destroy the wretched creature.”

Greylock. A city supported by a network of scaffolding, bleeding rust and wheezing steam. Patrolled by an army of ‘metal men’—creatures who’re designed for nothing more than to kill and destroy. Nothing grows. Nothing truly lives.

The tower stands like an ice-pick, pushing through a snarl of thorns, resting upon the outskirts of Greylock. It is home to the Lady of Chains, a woman imprisoned without a sentence. A woman who almost single-handedly destroyed the world . . .

Viola, a young orphan girl, has been thrust into this nightmarish world by the devious Mrs Casket, caretaker of the tower and maid to the mysterious lady. She’s been given a task which could either see her demise or be her salvation.

But who is the Lady of Chains? And why does she insist that she is connected to Viola? With the clock ticking and the metal men drawing near, Viola is about to learn that not everything is what it seems . . .

A spellbinding novelette with elements of steampunk.

Hansel and Gretel
Rogan and the Gargoyle

Also contains a preview of the up-coming horror serial, The Fragile Things.

3.0 out of 5 stars Just an okay book February 3, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
I'd like to thank the author for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review and for being so patient for the review. It's been a few months coming.
This book was just okay for me. There was action in it, and suspense, and mystery. But here were a lot of things that weren't explained very well, or described very well. Maybe you just have to put your mindset into the steampunk world before opening this book and it would make more sense. The interaction between Viola and the Lady in Chains was good, and you couldn't help but feel a little sorry for the Lady. But the end just sort of confused me.
The short stories afterwards were interesting twists, so they were just okay too. Ultimately, if you're going to read this book, go get it out of the library.

5.0 out of 5 stars New Exciting Genre Mix: Fantasy, Horror, Mystery November 26, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
This is the review of Kindle edition "The Lady of Chains and Other Stories" by author V. Shaw.
Overall, I'd say, as her first ebook, WOW on the debut of this author's craft - "The Lady of Chains" main part of the book is a refreshing original mix of fantasy, horror, and mystery unlike anything else. And in the "Other Stories" V. Shaw includes the fascinating retelling of short stories: "Hansel and Gretel", "Rogan and the Gargoyle", and "The Silent World". Finally, she includes an extracted preview of her next horror story: "The Fragile Things". The book as a whole is a must read with something for everyone....
The main protagonist in the "Lady of Chains", Viola, is a sixteen year old orphan (cleaner in a brothel with no privacy to herself) is summoned for an opportunity to escape offered by Mrs. Casket who takes care of an eerie Tower beyond Viola's home city named Greylock. Mrs. Casket is the caretaker for ten years to the creature enslaved in this tower: The Lady of Chains. Mrs. Casket gives Viola an ultimatum - within seventy-two hours, and not a second longer, Voila must cut the throat of The Lady of Chains or Viola will be returned and enslaved in her 'just escaped' horrific life.
Viola is torn with which path to choose: killing, as she's never done before, or back to her departed hell. But, as Mrs. Casket exhibits with a bit-off finger, the creature`s swelling insanity, vicious bites, and growing power is enough for massive destruction - this gives good reason to assert The Lady of Chains' demise. But why Viola? - You must read the story to find out. Somehow Viola is special and The Lady of Chains will trust her, per Mrs. Casket.

5.0 out of 5 stars A touch of mystery and fantasy : Great Read November 22, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
At first I thought this book was going to be another one of those vampire novels since judging by its description, it seems to be gothic in nature. But when I started reading it, page by page I realized that this was going to be a fantastic read. Fantasy and mystery are two elements that will never go wrong together. And yes, this is a spell bounding fantasy novel with a good twist in stored.

Viola, the main protagonist in the story is caught in a dilemma in which she herself does not fully understand. Death or salvation, these are the two things that she has to face if the deed that was bestowed upon her is accomplished or not. But the answer to that solely depends if she uncovers the truth behind her prey, the Lady of Chains, a woman who claims to have a strong connection with viola. I really loved how V. Shaw came up with this intriguing and underlying idea about a mysterious connection between the main protagonist and antagonist of the story. It sets everything on fire, the confusion, lies, illusion and bizarre plot contributes to the overall appeal of the novel.

The other books included were classics! Hansel and Gretel, Rogan and the Gargoyle and The Silent World are brilliant books that are known by almost all bookworms around the globe. But even though they are famous, most people haven't really read the books. It was a great feeling of nostalgia to get to read through the pages of these classic literatures and reminisce the past.

I highly recommend this book if you are looking for a fast paced and thrilling plot with a touch of mystery in the world of fantasy. It sets your imagination on fire. I'm really looking forward for another V. Shaw installment.

5.0 out of 5 stars Haunting, Enchanting and Thrilling - A fantastic Read. November 30, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
This is a haunting tale of an almost underworld existence of brothels, slavery and madness. The lead character is a girl from a deprived background who you cant help but like for her honesty and innate moral virtue. The character is so well drawn in this book you can't help but like her and follow her story with every nerve gripping moment. The story is written to captivate the reader and it does this with the greatest of ease. It's a fantastic story with the most horrendous of characters described with blood chilling imagery.
As the story progresses Viola's(the lead character) morals are tested at their most fundamental. I really loved the way in which the truth of the relationships between the characters was revealed. This is not a book to be dismissed to the realm of horror. It is so well written you feel you know the characters and the predicaments first hand. I loved it and couldn't put the book down.
To top all of that some well-loved classics are also included; An excellent composition, worth every cent.
