Biography

Known far and wide as one half of Grammy Award-winning superstar duo Gnarls Barkley, CeeLo Green is a true 21st Century renaissance man. Having first made his bones as a member of southern hip-hop pioneers, Goodie Mob, Green soon struck out on his own with 2002’s “CEELO GREEN AND HIS PERFECT IMPERFECTIONS,” highlighted by the Timbaland-produced hit single, “Closet ... Editorial Reviews

Elektra recording artist Cee-Lo Green's first solo work in more than six years, sees the endlessly inventive singer/writer/rapper/producer continuing to push hip-hop and soul's creative envelope, this time working with a star-studded cast of producers that includes Salaam Remi (Nas, Amy Winehouse), Jack Splash (Alicia Keys, Missy Elliot, Jamie Foxx), and Fraser T. Smith (Nelly Furtado, James Morrison, Ellie Goulding).

Released last month via Green's official YouTube channel, the blockbuster first single 'F**k You' caused an instant viral commotion, drawing more than 2 million plays in its first five days online. 'F**k You' - co-written and produced by the multi-platinum certified production trio, The Smeezingtons, featuring Green's Elektra labelmate, Bruno Mars - is now bulleting its way up the top 40 on Billboard's 'Hot 100' singles chart. Along with its phenomenal popular success, the single has also received ecstatic critical acclamation from coast to coast. 'One of the greatest songs in the history of humankind,' declared The Dallas Observer's 'DC9 At Night' music blog.

4.0 out of 5 stars Superb; A Stand-out effort November 11, 2010
Format:Audio CD
Cee Lo Green (aka Thomas Callaway) is one of the most intriguing artists of modern times. Green possesses one of the most soulful voices out there as a vocally, yet he additionally indulges into rap (he was a member of Goodie Mob back in the day). Perhaps the prominence of Green's soulful, unmistakable voice bowed in his turn with Danger Mouse in the exceptional duo Gnarls Barkley where Green's superb vocal performance made "Crazy" a mega-crossover hit. On The Lady Killer, Green spoils the listener with his distinctive vocals, mixed with his ingenious production work that expertly mixes anachronistic 70s soul and modern hip-hop sensibility. 'The Lady Killer' probably should have failed to make a cohesive effort given Cee-Lo's schizophrenic tendencies as a musician, but instead, the effort is one that is more `exceptional' than `flawed' in nature. Built loosely around the concept of `killing ladies,' 'The Lady Killer' is certainly enjoyable (maybe entertaining is the word).

After an odd, manic introduction sets the tone ("The Lady Killer Theme (Intro)), the synthesizer/string-laden/neo-soul produced "Bright Lights Bigger City" proves to be a smart, soulful opener. The strings are lovely and truly heighten the `1970s' sound which Green is trying to convey. The `hook' is solid, if simple and Green's vocals are exceptional. On viral hit and first single "F$%& You," Green has crafted a `once-in-a lifetime' novelty cut that greatly heightens his somewhat underrated profile. The track has surprising been embraced despite its profanity laden songwriting.

5.0 out of 5 stars PHENOMENAL!!! November 22, 2010
By Lego
Format:MP3 Music|Amazon Verified Purchase
Why have more people not reviewed this? The Lady Killer is one of the most amazing albums I have heard in years. I am usually a rock music type of person, but I can make an exception for this album. All of the songs are very catchy and very well done. The whole thing has a very strong retro / Motown vibe. Just listen to the song samples and you'll be hooked. Give this one a try, even if you don't normally like the hip-hop genre.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellence In The Modern Music World November 15, 2010
Format:Audio CD
After nearly eight years away from solo recording and wading through other projects such as the universally acclained Gnarles Barkley projects with Danger Mouse, this multi talented vocalist/songwriter/producer/rapper and Georgia native drops his third effort under his own name. As a man with a wide range of emotion and power in his voice, writing and production style this album brings in all of the different types of things that Cee Lo values musically:the cross generational funk/soul/R&B/hip-hop potentcy of his musical sound, his dramatic style of transitioning between minor chords in the manner of many of his forbearers and perhaps most importantly his vocal style. Because on the surface one might see Cee Lo as something of an oversinger because of the loud, gospel fired wail of his voice. But fact of the matter is he also knows about a lesson many R&B vocalists have had to learn the hard way often enough these days. That is that if one UNDER-sings enough in order to maintain a certain "less is more" ethic than one might just find themselves with a dull, boring sound as a result. It's all too common for someone to confuse the difference between oversinging and a spiritually involved and often joyous singer whose only pushing themselves to the very end of their ability. And this represents not only the nature of Cee-Lo's singing but his music and general persona. One of the best examples of this overall on this album is "Bright Lights Bigger City" which is wrapped in a swath of echoplexed electro new wave style polyphonic synth bursts,a tight and pulsing beat and one of the cleanest, funkiest early 80's Louis Johnson bumping bassline courtesy of Tony Reyes.... 5.0 out of 5 stars The 3rd Album I've purchased all year November 24, 2010
Format:Audio CD
2010 proved to be an epic year of failure in the music industry. With constant musical duds like Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga and Katy Perry being shoved in your face everywhere you turn, this album by the talented Cee-Lo was like a breath of fresh air in a suffocating world of pop music. Yes, some of the music is a little over the top, but the album is fun, memorable, and gets you singing and booty shakin' within the first few tracks.

I rarely buy an entire album, and I rarely even purchase music at all because of the lack of quality performers. I am a rock n' roll girl that leans towards industrial, metal and hard rock, but I do appreciate "feel good" music and a beautiful voice. Cee-Lo has such a strong, clear, soulful voice and you can't help but get chills. I've been telling all of my friends to purchase this album and support this great musician. Hopefully you will take my advice and do the same.

After introducing himself, claiming his name to be "unimportant," Cee-Lo Green goes on to say "I'm often asked, what do I do for a living and I answer 'I do what I want.'" Clearly he takes this sentence to heart with his first solo recording since 2004's Cee-Lo Green...Is the Soul Machine.

Better known for his work with producer Danger Mouse and their band Gnarls Barkley, Cee-Lo Green's trademark vocals have been all over pop radio since their debut release, St. Elsewhere, in 2006. Now a near household name, Cee-Lo Green offers up fourteen tracks of powerful soul with its own theme music as the intro and outro sharing their name with the album, "The Lady Killer."

In August, the album's first single, "F**k You," became the feel-good hit of the late summer, dominating YouTube views and radio waves with the edited version, "Forget You." While the single easily stands above the rest in both musical and lyrical fun, The Lady Killer would have no problem finding success without it as there are plenty of entertaining tracks. The synth-heavy "Bright Lights Bigger City," the album's first full length track, is upbeat, energetic, and ready for dance clubs while just a few tracks later, "Bodies" shows of Cee-Lo's more soulful side. While the album does an excellent job balancing styles, moods, and tempos, Green's voice remains consistently powerful.

Although Danger Mouse's backing tracks will be missed by Gnarls Barkley fans, The Lady Killer is actually the most consistently solid album Cee-Lo Green has ever been a part of. Even the record's closing track, a cover of Band of Horses' "No One's Gonna Love You," highlights Green's ability to blend genres simply by opening his mouth.

Cee Lo is talented at whatever he does. This album is no exception. It's so much different from his work with The Goodie Mob, but just as good.
