3.0 out of 5 stars A Little Too Sugary Sweet October 3, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
The Lady and the Locksmith is about a very good looking locksmith (Carl) who is called to a wealthy home to change a broken lock. A very good looking young lady (Susannah), who presents herself initially as a parlourmaid, catches his eye and quickly Carl is intrigued by her beauty and innocence. Turns out that Susannah is being locked in the house by her father, whose political aspirations overshadow the happiness of his daughter. Carl falls madly in love with Susannah and vows to assist in her escape...

Susannah is very, very sweet and guileless... almost too sugary in her actions and responses to Carl and life itself. And Carl is painted as this flawless big-hearted hero sent to save the damsel from her evil father. Not a bad read but the story was banal-lacking any type of adventure, intrigue, or even true conflict. The reason for her incarceration was also very trite. Everything ended up being wrapped in a neat little bow where everyone gets their happy ending, even the "dastardly" father gets what he wants. Although the story was stale...still worthy of three stars.

3.0 out of 5 stars Different Enjoyable Story August 31, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
I liked it, the story was a unique one that I haven't heard before so it kept me hooked. I believe it was well written and the characters strong. Some issues I had were that I could have imagined this with alot more detail it almost felt like there were parts missing and a bit rushed at times which could possibly be the Kindle version I'm not sure. I would have liked to know more information about her father, the Dr, and even Carl himself. In essance I'm saying it was too short making it lacking depth but still enjoyable. I will look for other books by this author since she has gone out of the box with the normal hum drum romance stories. The price was right as well. Enjoy

3.0 out of 5 stars Very unusual story-enjoyable read October 14, 2011

Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This was a delightful "novella." I almost wish it had been a novel to draw out more of the background of the young herione. In any event for the shortness of the story and the originality (never readed anything like it before), it is definitely worth reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sweet little Victorian romance! October 23, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Susannah Fortescue has been held a prisoner in her own home for the last 4 years. When the house is all but deserted, she manages to escape her room/prison. She goes into town and hires a locksmith.

Carl Janssen is the handsome locksmith who comes to fix the lock. He is instantly taken with the lovely woman who answers the door. She convinces him to accompany her on an errand, and he does so. Her reactions to everything are wide-eyed, and innocent.

They begin to spend time together--stolen moments are all they have...until her father finds out that she has been escaping her room at night.

I loved this little Victorian novella! Yes, it was sweet; the hero seemed a little to perfect; the heroine innocent and sweet as well; and the father made to be the villain. All in all, the plot wasn't very deep, but I really enjoyed reading it. No, there was not extensive background to either character, but one must remember this was a short novella. I think the author did a very good job of getting the story across. There are times when we all need something kind and tender to read, and for me, this was one to mark as such. Thank you, Ms. Young, for writing this. Very highly recommended!

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice Victorian romance October 14, 2011
By JJCloud
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I thought this was a sweet story. It is a bit short, only 8 chapters long, a "novella." It has mistaken identities, intrigue, and a disapproving father. The dialogue was well-written and it moved along at a past pace. It would have been nice if there was a bit more development outside of the romance, but the romance was thoroughly enjoyable. The novella includes an excerpt from the authors latest novel which looks like a good read worth checking out. I am happy to have been given the opportunity to discover this author through this novella, which was a free download when I got it.

3.0 out of 5 stars odd characters and story March 3, 2013
By Laynie
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I liked the suitor in the story. The lady was difficult to appreciate as a person, though it was easy to have sympathy for her initial situation. The story was a little flat and very odd. I was disappointed because the premise was terrific and it could have been done well.
