More About the Author

I am a novelist and playwright who loves books--old and new. My 2013 New York Times Best Selling novel, THE BOOKMAN'S TALE, is set in the world of rare books--a world I learned all about during my years as an antiquarian bookseller and book collector. THE BOOKMAN'S TALE has been sold in 12 foreign markets, from Russia to Romania, Finland to France. My next novel, FIRST IMPRESSIONS, features Jane Austen as a major character and wil be published by Viking in October, 2014 . My plays for children have been seen in over 3000 productions worldwide, and I love hearing from students and teachers who are involved in producing my plays. I especially enjoy visiting schools to chat with student actors and writers. I worked for more than a decade at Summit School in Winston-Salem, NC, and have a real soft spot for school visits. It is funny, entertaining, and heartfelt.

As a child, I devoured books whole, and was one-of-the-weirdos who would pick out a favorite book to read at a certain time of day or place--does this make sense?

This would make a fantastic gift for the theatre-loving teen on your shopping list.

I loved this book! The story is hilarious and heartfelt, without ever stooping to sentimentality. Fans of "Glee," "Wicked," and "Hairspray" will flip for this sharp, sassy, and utterly believable story of a talented plus-size teen in a standard-size theatre world. Aggie and all the other characters are rendered with a clear, unflinching eye (Aggie's no angel), and a lot of humanity as well. If you've done theatre at any point in your life, or if you've ever wanted to get onstage and perform, you'll identify with Aggie's passion, and you'll recognize her challenges, as well. Best of all, you'll cheer at her triumphs. I predict this book will be a major hit. This would make a fantastic gift for the theatre-loving teen on your shopping list.

Charlie Lovett captures youth in a realistic, interesting, provocative way. He addresses the complexities of growing up in today's world through believable characters who form relationships that are sometimes predictable and often not. The story line will interest youth and adults, particularly those who have experienced the magic of theatre. Charlie creates male and female characters in an equally appealing manner. I would have enjoyed conversations with many characters in the book. Relationships between youth and adults are treated fairly, even when there might be cause for angst. I worked with young people for many years and know that parts of many of them are represented in characters in the book. If you have ever been a teenager, or know one, this book is for you.

As a writer and publisher of plays for teens, I greatly appreciate Charlie Lovett's richly developed characters. THE FAT LADY SINGS leads you on a journey of self-acceptance, whether you are a teen or remember what it was like to be one. This book carries its audience of readers to a theatre stage--or perhaps it's a stage of life--and beautifully illustrates how to feel comfortable with yourself, both inside and out.

Just finished reading this and absolutely loved it! I highly recommend this not only to anyone who has ever done theatre, but to anyone who has ever had a concern about their body image. A must read!!! It is funny, entertaining, and heartfelt. It's a great read for teens to adults as it provides moments to reminisce over those awkward years in high school. Whether you dream of one day making it on Broadway, or have long since given up those dreams, this book will remind you of all those wonderful theatre adventures. I definitely recommend it!
