Editorial Reviews

Review

"It is important for today's healthcare practitioners to understand the correct meaning and use of medical terminology...The clinical importance of language is made clear throughout the book. The terminology comes to life  with practical application sections and with case studies  that discuss a range of medical conditions  and procedures. This is a well-presented and challenging workbook that will be usefulfor established practitioners as well as students."

I had the ninth edition when I took my medical coding course, and I loved it! I was nervous about ordering the 10th edition because sometimes the sequels are not as good, but I decided to order it because I assumed it would have the most current information...and unlike the 9th edition, it also had abbreviations that were no longer used (and the substitutes that should be used).

The 10th edition still contains many things I had loved about its predecessor. Explanations are very straight-forward and simple to understand (moreso than in the last edition), even for those new to anatomy and medical terminology. The exercises give you plenty of practice so that you absorb the information. It also has the answers after each section so you can check your work.

There were some things I didn't like as well in the 10th edition in comparison to the 9th edition:
1. The book is not as sturdy.
2. I really miss the CD, which was one of the best things about the 9th edition. If you order a NEW book of the 10th edition, you can register for free online content. I haven't been able to access the Resources yet because I have to allow pop-ups...and I can't remember how to enable them (and I'm annoyed that I have to really). The CD in the 9th edition had quizzes, audio that pronounced the words, and even games that made learning enjoyable.
3. The diagrams, I don't think, are quite as good. They are more simplified, and yet I find them a little more confusing because of it.

One thing that I have mixed feelings about is that there are more photographs. These are interesting and give you a better concept about the diseases you will be learning about...but many of them are rather nauseating.

I bought this for a medical terminology course I was taking. I was afraid it would be too basic, but I learned a lot.

This book is a cross between a traditional textbook and a workbook. Each chapter contains a short section (~5-10 pages) of text and figures on the topic being studied, followed by a break down of related roots and terminology and a short personal testimony from a patient, which shows the clinical relevance of the information being studied. The last half of each chapter contains a number of different activities fill-in-the-blank and matching style to practice the information covered.

What's helpful?
-Emphasis on learning roots - rather than requiring you to memorize each term, this book focuses on common roots found in medical words so you will be prepared to confront new words you come across

-Plenty of practice activities - I found there were more practice exercises in each chapter than I needed to do well, so I skipped many of them, but it was good to know they were there for topics I was a less familiar with

-Concise- gives a nice overview of all the information someone interested in medicine would need to know without being overwhelming

Overall, I would say this is a great text for an undergrad or anyone interested in medicine. It must cover a lot of ground in one book, so it cannot be expected to be extremely detailed. It is a good resource to have available.

*If you buy the textbook new, it comes with an access code to the Evolve website. This is useful because it has pdf's containing the definitions of the terminology used in the textbook. This is convenient, but the definitions can be found online or in any medical dictionary if you don't have the access code.

I needed this book for my medical terminology class and it was perfect. It is all explained in a really easy to understand way. The prefixes/suffixes and all that are needed for memorization are broken down in to easy to read tables. I would recommend this to anyone who is beginning to study medicine, it is a great way to learn the information.

I purchased this book new instead of used thinking it would come with an access code as it alludes to in the description. Unfortunately, the description points you to a QR code that links to a mobile app that may or may not be useful later in the semester but gave no access to my course online - I had to purchase access to that directly from the publisher for an additional $50.

The content of the book looks great but some students such as myself would benefit from a clearer description regarding access to the online Evolve course which is not included with the purchase of a new book as the description and some reviews might lead you to believe. Instead, you get access to free mobile app and online "resources" which looks similar to the course I had to purchase access to but without the graded modules.

I like this book i think it was easy to read and understand. I am a pre-med student and i think it even was really informative for somebody really interested in medicine. It didnt just give you etymology of words it was also thorough in its explanations of diseases including diagnostic testing, treatment, etc.

This is probably one of my favorite textbooks. I love the way it's laid out. It's very accessible and is rich with information. I took anatomy the semester prior to taking medical terminology and wish I'd had this text back then. It covers much of the same material as my anatomy book, but this book does a much better job of explaining things. This is one book that I might not sell.
