From the Back Cover

Nobody enters here after dark. Come back in the morning . . . if you're still breathing.

Thomas Ward is the seventh son of a seventh son, and apprentice to the local Spook. He has battled boggarts, witches, and the most powerful evils of the Dark. But his most trying task is yet to come.

When Tom and the Spook are deceived by one they trust, they find themselves in the most terrifying danger yet. Blood-hungry creatures have invaded a sleepy village. Tom can save the Spook—and the whole county—but only by betraying one of his greatest allies. With everything on the line, Tom must have the courage to stand and fight, and to face a choice that could break his heart.

More About the Author

Joseph Delaney formerly taught media and film studies at a high school in Blackpool, England. He lives with his family in Lancashire, in the middle of boggart territory.

The Last Apprentice: Lure of the Dead is another wonderfull book in the series. *NOTE* READ ALL BOOKS BEFORE, OR NITHING WILL MAKE SENSE! In this book, Thomas Ward, the County's almost full-fledged spook finds out what must be done to destroy The Feind once and for all. While buying books for Old Gregory's new library, Tom vistits a toun where strangers are not welcome, no one is out after dark, and something is definately going on. *SPOILER ALERT* Tom finds out that some of the townspeople are really vampiric demons from Romania, and they are trying to summon Siscoi, The Feinds most powerful servant.

This is an extremely well-written series. Delaney is a terrific author with a vivid imagination. His writing is economical, on-point and keeps the action moving. That's to be expected from him. What I didn't expect was the way the plot unfolded.

This entire series is leading up to the final destruction of the Fiend. Tom and Alice are absolutely and singularly essential to this goal. No one can accomplish this but them. Add to that fact that the complicated relationship between Tom and Alice has been building with a nice, complex momentum up to this point. I fully expected this book to focus much more on Tom and Alice as we near the climax of this epic story. It doesn't.

As spooky and fun as these books are, the best part even above the action, is the complicated relationship between Tom and Alice. He's works with the light forces. She's from the dark. Can we really trust Alice? Will she turn completely to the dark? Will Tom be influenced by his feelings for her and betray the forces of light. This book should be leading us to the answers of all these questions. It doesn't. The relationship between Tom and Alice is almost a metaphor for how the forces of dark and light work together to create the experience of life, as we know it and the sacrifices that go along with it. It could really be showcased in this book in a beautiful way, but it's not.

The goal of this series is to destroy the Fiend, yet this book goes off and tells a completely different story about Tom and the Spook traveling to the town of Todmorden to retrieve some books for their new library and how things go awry. The readers are taken along this story track. Happening "off the page", Alice has gone to find Gimalkin, who carries the Fiend's head and work with her.

I've been reading this series for the last couple years and it's never let me down. Every book has been more exciting than the last as it builds upon the story. If you you like stories with old folk tales and myths brought to life, you'll love this one!

I've been reading this series since book one, Revenge of the Witch. This is such a great series, and by this point, things have gotten SO out of control! Tom is truly on his way to becoming The Spook and is definitely showing how much he's grown from all the things he's been through. Like all the previous books, this one is full of dark magic, witch assassin's, The Fiend, vampires, demons, new/old characters, a reunion with The Spook's boggart (I'll just say this, it's pretty freaking awesome!). Just when you thought Tom couldn't get pushed any further on what he has to do in order to vanquish The Fiend and save lives, this book just got real and FAST! Sacrifices must be made, battles are fought, secrets revealed as well! There's also a bit of mystery with Alice and finally some more mention on Tom's brother James, but nothing fully clear yet! AND ONE MORE THING! People have been complaining about how this and the last book (Grimalkin, the witch assassin) weren't actually new books in the series. HERE'S THE DEAL FOR FUTURE PEOPLE WHO READ THIS SERIES! This series was originally published in England first and is called by The Wardstone Chronicles, and when the series made it to the U.S., they CHANGED THE TITLES of the books to The Last Apprentice. Example: Revenge of the Witch is called The Spook's Apprentice in the UK version. The only difference in the UK and The US versions is that the titles are different and that the UK books come out EARLIER than the US ones! SO THERE! Just make sure when you read this series that you don't get the titles mixed up. You're welcome.

This book has been great! The plot moves at the right place and is on it's way to wrap up the story of Tom Ward. This book was rather sad because all the characters have grown older. The Spook is no longer a proud man as he once was. He used to stand strong but is now growing old and cannot keep up with the dark. Tom has been thinking like a Spook and no longer an apprentice. Tom as grown older, smarter; he is on his way to becoming a great spook.

I recommend this book to those who have read the other 12 books.

Five stars for book ten! Joseph Delaney continues to keep his readers enthralled! I am looking forward to reading book 11. The only complaint I have, is waiting for the next book to come out! I got behind in my reading, so this time I can read two "Last Apprentice" books back-to-back. "Harry Potter" is an excellent series, but it has nothing over the "Last Apprentice" books.
