THE LAST BASTION (1984) Directed by George Miller and Chris Thompson.

Starring Michael Blakemore (as Australian Prime Minister John
Curtin) Timothy West (as Winston Churchill) Warren Mitchell (as
Franklin Delano Roosevelt) and Robert Vaughn as General Douglas
Macarthur.

Begining in Sept, 1939 and ending in early 1943, the film tells the
story of Australia during the Second World War with a special emphasis
on Australian politics and Australia's relations with Great Britain and
the United States.

A perfect example of how historical films should be made!!! Not only
is the history presented in a serious, fair and balanced manner but the
film covers much WW 2 material that this viewer has not seen touched
upon before. Australia tends to be ignored in the World War 2 film
sweepstakes consequently this film is quite the revelation. The
Aussies are not great fans of Winston Churchill---who they believe
rightly or wrongly---not to have cared much what happened to their
country or indeed the soldiers they sent to fight for the Empire in
Greece and North Africa and FDR is chided for being too much under the
sway of Churchill.

Obviously for Australia, the great menace of the War was not the
European members of the Axis but the Imperial Japanese Empire who posed
a very real and mortal threat to that country. Australian politicians
were constantly warning both Churchill and FDR about that threat to
little or no avail finally resulting in their withdrawing their troops
from the European theater.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Film May 17, 2013
Format:VHS Tape
I enjoyed this film over 15 years ago and have not been able to find it since. The politics of the second world war from the viewpoint of Australia was eye opening. The dynamics between England and the rest of the British Empire were brilliantly portrayed in the movie. It was one of those rare films that I wished would not end. The acting was terrific! Whoever owns this movie should put it out on DVD or get it out again in someway. This is a movie masterpiece and it is a shame that more people are not able to see it due to the only medium (VHS)it is on.
