I read this several months ago, and that this story is still so fresh in my head says a great deal about how much I loved this book. This was a great political thriller with a bit of a paranormal twist.

Just as the title states, the events in this story centers around the final presidential election in the United States before the alleged end time of 2012. There is a lot of action and parts of it almost had an Indiana Jones feel, with archeology and ancient prophecies and mysteries. The plot was wonderful, but I really felt like the characters drove this story.

I freely admit that when I read a book heavy in politics I find myself trying to figure out the political leanings of the author. I know it doesn't really matter but I still do it, and many times I can peg a definite lean one way or another. Mr. Carrigan, however, did not let anything show. The story was a very good example of the impartial narrarator.

There were interesting back-stories for most of the characters, and I did have to re-read passages a few times to commit the deatails to memory. That might be due to my personal problem with names, but I did feel there was a bit too much information given in chunks at times. Even so, I did like the back-stories because I enjoy knowing about the 'why' behind actions.

The ending was not what I was expecting, which I count as a good thing. I won't spoil the party, but I will say that this book is not the typical 'end of the world' story.
Five stars from me, and recommended for anyone that enjoys a well written and unique political thriller. If there is a follow-up I will absolutely be buying.

A very entertaining novel. This book has wonderful characters and an interesting non-predictable ending. I was hooked from the start and couldn't wait to see what happens next. It's very well written and it would make an interesting movie.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent April 30, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
There were a lot of characters to keep track of in this book - but the author did a good job giving a brief history of most, the main characters more history than others, making it feel nicely balanced. Loved the timely nature of the book, and it really makes you think about what would happen if the POTUS started to deteriorate mentally - and are there enough checks and balances in place to prevent a national disaster? Thoroughly enjoyed the book, and hope the author write a sequel to it sometime.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun Read May 3, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
If you are a conservative political junkie you'll love this one. A bit slow at the beginning but then takes off. I had my doubts when I started the book but thoroughly enjoyed in as I got into it and couldn't put it down through the last half. And the ending was a surprise. Recommend for a fun read.

2.0 out of 5 stars Definitely Not 5 Star Material, or 4, or 3 October 10, 2011
By B. Ott
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The other nine reviewers must be friends and family.

Disjointed back stories, weak character development, little or no research, totally implausible story arc. Bad ending (Leaving a opening for a follow up, Please God NO!)

It is at least edited well and there were minimal typos, but do yourself a favor and move on to something else.

4.0 out of 5 stars Simply Entertaining July 12, 2011
By Tamara
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Even though the story is set around the 2012 election and the Maya doomsday prophecy, The Last Election is not a political or philosophical commentary. If you are looking for a deep read, this book is not for you, but if you enjoy reading a book purely for its entertainment value, The Last Election provides plenty of it. I found this to be a fun book with sympathetic characters, many villains to hate, and everything in between. The author uses these characters to weave the reader through some interesting, surprising, and action-filled plot twists. I will not recap the plot, as other reviewers have already done so, but I will recommend this book for readers who enjoy action/adventure stories with a little paranormal thrown in for good measure. This is a gripping, action packed thriller...Indiana Jones with a political twist. Thorough research by the author will have you wondering if something seemingly implausible could really happen. Makes me want to pack my cellar with doomsday supplies!
