Book Description

The year is 1969. Henry Conroy is a minister in an American doomsday cult based in England. Becoming a father for the first time, Henry moves his family home to Australia where his wife Elizabeth is reunited with her parents and pregnant, sickly sister.

When as a result of their beliefs the family suffer a series of avoidable tragedies, Henry begins to question the true character of his leader. Elizabeth, however, driven by grief and guilt holds ever tight to her faith and, even after a harrowing encounter with the man she and her husband once so revered, refuses to face the shocking truth.

Disheartened by failed prophecies, and impelled by disturbing rumours of sexual abuse, a defiant Henry relocates the family to church headquarters in California, where he faces an agonizing choice between continuing to live a lie and the possibility of losing his family forever.

THE LAST GREAT DAY

Howzat! interviewed Ben Mitchell in 1990 when he was in a Channel Seven cop show called Skirts. Instantly likeable, it was also obvious that Ben was a big music fan. We chatted about the music on the show and I recall being amused that Big Pig provided the soundtrack to a scene where a big cop chased a crook.

Ben later starred in Neighbours, sharing a house with Natalie Imbruglia's character. He returned to Ramsay Street 15 years later to play Tottie Goldsmith's ex. Ben also spent time in London, where he recorded his debut album, 2006s The Stars Can See. It's been a remarkable career, but nothing compared to Ben's life, which he documents in his debut novel, The Last Great Day ($29.95, benjamingrantmitchell.com).

When we chatted 21 years ago, I had no idea that Ben's early years were spent in a doomsday cult. The Worldwide Church of God, an organisation started by an American advertising man, who tipped that the world was going to end in 1975. Ben's dad was a minister in the church.

The Last Great Day is a compelling tale of faith and family, the pick of the books that Howzat! reviews here. A young Ben (Jacob in the book) enrages his dad by declaring, "Elvis is God." Ben plans to expand on his love of Elvis in his next novel. The strength of The Last Great Day puts that book firmly on the 'eagerly-awaited' list.

5.0 out of 5 stars Couldn't put it down. February 18, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I was a member of this cult for 28 years. Reading this book brought back a lot of memories. More people need to understand this sort of thing, because it happens more often than people think. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who is curious about how cults operate and their effect on people.

5.0 out of 5 stars The plain truth is exactly what you'll read! January 16, 2012

My mother joined this cult in Australia when I was 10 years old but followed a lot of their practices since I was born. I was a member until the age of 20! The Last Great Day brought back many memories (good and bad). Thanks for a great read Benjamin and sharing yours and your father's experiences. I have recommended your book to all my ex WWCG friends and even my mother can't wait to read it (she is no longer involved in the "Church").

5.0 out of 5 stars An autobiographical drama exposing life in a cult January 13, 2012
By K D
Format:Kindle Edition
I enjoy autobiographies, and I felt like a voyeur reading this real drama exposing a family's intimate involvement with a cult and the ripple effects. Set aside a day on the couch as you won't want to put it down.

More About the Author

Benjamin Grant Mitchell is "One of Australia's finest new writers." Jeff Jenkins, INPRESS (Dec 2012).

Mitchell's writing career began as a singer-songwriter. In 2006 he released his independently produced CD, 'The Stars Can See', featuring songs written and recorded in London where Mitchell lived for six years. The Stars Can See received radio play in Australia, England and Holland and garnered great reviews including getting 8/10 from AMERICANA UK: "His songwriting skills put him in a league above the litany of anonymous singer-songwriters."

Before turning to writing novels Mitchell had a successful career as an actor (with a lead role in Ozzie soap, Neighbours, guest starring on Blue Heelers, touring in fringe and mainstream theatre) and while working as an actor he also wrote, produced and starred in a couple of plays in his hometown of Melbourne.

His first novel, The Last Great Day (2011) was launched at Melbourne Writer's Festival and described as "A compelling tale of faith and family" (INPRESS) and "A fascinating story." (SUNRISE TV). On 16th August 2012 Mitchell published Zippin Pippin, his second novel, a comedy/romance inspired by his love of Elvis, roller-coasters and road-trips.

Mitchell's most recent book, The Little Booze Joke Book, is an ebook compilation of original (and/or improved!) bar and alcohol themed jokes, inspired by his highly successful year long blog project and 'social experiment', Year of Living Sober. The Little Booze Joke Book features over 100 of the best 'Little Booze Jokes' from over 140 blog posts.
