More About the Author

Thom Hartmann is the four-time Project Censored Award-winning, New York Times best-selling author of 23 books currently in print in over a dozen languages on five continents.
Hartmann is also an internationally known speaker on culture and communications, an author, and an innovator in the fields of psychiatry, ecology, and economics.
The co-founder (with his wife, Louise) and former Executive Director of The New England Salem Children's Village (1978) and The Hunter School (1997), he has led national innovations in the areas of residential treatment for abused children and private/public education for learning-disabled children.
He has helped set up hospitals, famine relief programs, schools, and refugee centers in India, Uganda, Australia, Colombia, Russia, and the United States through the German-based Salem International program. Formerly rostered with the State of Vermont as a psychotherapist, founder of The Michigan Healing Arts Center, and licensed as an NLP Trainer by Richard Bandler (who wrote the foreword to one of Thom's books), he was the originator of the revolutionary "Hunter/Farmer Hypothesis" to understand the psychiatric condition known as Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD).
A guest faculty member at Goddard College in Vermont, he also synthesized the "Younger/Older Culture model" for describing the underpinnings - and possible solutions - to the world's ecological and socio-political crises, suggesting that many of our problems are grounded in cultural "stories" which go back thousands of years.
Leonardo DiCaprio was inspired by Thom's book "The Last Hours of Ancient Sunlight" to make the movie "The 11th Hour" (in which Thom appears), and Warner Brothers is making a movie starring DiCaprio and Robert De Niro from the book Thom co-authored with Lamar Waldron, "Legacy of Secrecy."
Talkers Magazine named Thom Hartmann as the 8th most important talk show host in America in 2011, 2012, and 2013 (10th the two previous years), and for three of the past five years the #1 most important progressive host, in their "Heavy Hundred" ranking. His radio show is syndicated on for-profit radio stations nationwide by Dial-Global, on non-profit and community stations nationwide by Pacifica, across the entire North American continent on SiriusXM Satellite radio, on cable systems nationwide by Cable Radio Network (CRN), on its own YouTube channel, via Livestream on its own Livestream channel, via subscription podcasts, worldwide through the US Armed Forces Network, and through the Thom Hartmann App in the App Store. The radio show is also simulcast as TV in realtime into nearly 60 million US and Canadian homes by the Free Speech TV Network on Dish Network, DirectTV, and cable TV systems nationwide.
His evening TV program, The Big Picture, is wholly owned by his own production company, produced in the RT studios, and licensed to and carried by Free Speech TV in the US, and into over 600 million homes in 104 countries via broadcast and cable by the RT TV network, and distributed worldwide on the web on Hulu.
As an entrepreneur, he's founded several successful businesses which still are operating, and lived and worked with his wife, Louise, and their three (now adult) children on several continents.
He was born and grew up in Michigan, and retains strong ties to the Midwest, although he and Louise have lived in New Hampshire, Vermont, Georgia, Germany, and Oregon...and now live on a boat in Washington D.C. with their attack-cat, Higgins.

This short essay should be required reading for every political faction that has the power to determine the future. We don't have much time to regroup. But Thom writes not just of the problems, with well documented resources, but offers solutions and "soulutions" if we are to reverse our road to extinction...
As a geological engineer, it's been extremely difficult to watch the world destroyed by "corporatism" and pure hateful, greed! As a baby boomer, for many years I drank the kool aid... but then there was that nagging feeling you get deep in your gut, telling you that it isn't A-Ok. There are few people like Thom willing to tell us to pay attention to all that once was an American dream, has become our worst nightmare! Thom Hartman, has for years championed for those who thought It was only kool aid. A truly insightful, common sense driven man! Also, a writer for all readers. His straight forward, no nonsense approach to get Mankind to Wake Up!!!!
Best yet, while Thom does a fabulous job tearing down or false sense of hope, he always has a viable solution to our dire problems today. If only this book came in a kool aid flavor.
All I can say after reading Thom's works.... Tag! You're it!

Brilliant, clear and convincing. Opposing views exist we know but if Thom Hartmann is right it is chilling to think that the human race could already be on the path to extinction and sooner than we would ever have imagined.

Meanwhile, here in Australia, the newly elected conservative government is determined to repeal the little carbon pricing legislation enacted by the outgoing labour government as they bury their heads in the sand concerning the realities and consequences of man made global warming.

Essential reading for all climate sceptics, especially politicians, in all Countries, me thinks!!

There ARE no "adults." There are only children in various shapes, colors and sizes from toddlers to 100+ year-olds. The political, military, banking and corporate weenies are little more than "boys with toys." All of their projected illusions & delusions of "power" and "control" are about to be decimated by the incoming, raging winds of reality. Thom Hartmann is among our brightest. I recognized this and have watched him through the years, when he understood and explained that ADD and ADHD were essentially perpetrated frauds by psychiatrists or what I call..."witchdoctors of the mind." But with regard to our present quagmire of assigning dollar values to clean air, water, food and shelter; unfortunately our illustrious ancestors made too, too, too many deadly mistakes. This led to prematurely and foolishly applied technologies, paving the way for our current Highway to Extinction. FOUR STARS for great presentation, excellent research and salesmanship. But are incorrect. We are long past the "point of no return" or what your people call the "tipping point." That cost you ONE STAR. The die is cast, as the Roman would say, as they added another nail in the coffin with the destructive tool of relentless, unforgiving DEBT. Have a nice day (or cry), lol

There have been five mass extinctions in the history of life on Earth - one precipitated by an asteroid impact. However all five were primarily driven by global warming, and author Hartmann contends we're now entering the sixth. The largest extinction (Permian Mass Extinction) began 250 million years ago with massive volcanic eruptions in today's Siberia releasing enormous quantities of CO2 into the atmosphere over thousands of years. The initial result was prolonged cooling from all the ash in the atmosphere, followed by at least a 6 C rise in temperatures which then triggered the release of massive quantities of previously frozen methane - creating a second 5 - 6 C increase. Experts also contend that the asteroid strike credited with killing the dinosaurs also released enormous quantities of CO2 from the rocks in the area - thus initially creating a nuclear winter, followed by global warming.

The largest increases in temperatures are occurring in the northern regions - where an enormous amount of carbon is sequestered in the frozen soils and permafrost (1,800 billion metric tons, vs. 350 billion metric tons put into the atmosphere by fossil fuel combustion since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution.

When permafrost melts, it releases either CO2 or methane depending on the local climactic changes - a warmer, wetter climate produces CO2, while a warmer, dryer climate produces methane emissions. Methane is 105X more potent than CO2 over a 20-year time period.

There's also enormous potential for methane releases in the deeper oceans. The amount of methane in the form of clathrates (eg. frozen methane slurry on the floor of the continental shelves around the world's oceans is at least 2X all the planet's known underground coal, oil and gas.

Give this brief but carefully documented essay five stars for clearly presenting our common global crisis in urgent and convincing terms. The charts, graphs and references alone are worth the modest price. A few photos may have helped, but did not detract from the impact of this serious little book of valid warning about impending extinction of life as we know it. Key word...methane clathrates
