Review

"Abbott is one of the best thriller writers in the business, and he delivers action and complex characters in an explosive cocktail. The next Capra novel cannot come fast enough."—Associated Press

"Like Adrenaline, this is a fast-paced thriller with a likable, morally conflicted hero. Sam is in a difficult situation, seemingly forced to commit murder to find his son, and-this is a testament to Abbott's skills as a storyteller-we really don't know whether he will follow through. The book ends on an upbeat note, giving Sam a certain amount of closure. Still, let's hope Abbott isn't through with Sam. He's a very well drawn character, and it would be nice to see him again."—Booklist

"This is the second in the Capra series, and he hasn't slowed down. It has killings, betrayals, big-time conspiracies and action galore."—The Oklahoman

"The Adrenaline rush that won't stop."—San Antonio Express-News

"Twisty, turny, and terrific."—USA TODAY on Adrenaline

"[An] edgy, seat-of-your-pants spy caper."—Entertainment Weekly on Adrenaline

"Outstanding . . . genuinely moving . . . Abbott hits full stride early on and never lets up. Readers who thrive on a relentless narrative pace and a straight line to the finish won't be disappointed."—Publishers Weekly (starred review) on Adrenaline

"Extremely compelling . . . a thriller that will get even the most jaded reader's pulse racing . . . a grand slam home run."—Associated Press on Adrenaline

As well, I am immediately reading the third book in this series and will continue to read Abbott and Sam Capra novels.

Sam Capra's story is continued from ADRENALINE - you need to read that book first before you start THE LAST MINUTE.

To say that Sam Capra is motivated would be an understatement. His ex-wife, who committed treason against the CIA and cost Sam his job with the "Special Projects", now lies in a permanent vegetative state. His former employers are actively pursuing him for his alleged crimes that occurred while trying to clean up the mess that his wife created. On top of that, a mysterious criminal group, The Nine Suns, has kidnapped his newborn son, Daniel. The only way Sam will ever see his son again is if he finds and murders the man who holds the evidence to expose the Nine Suns. If he fails to kill the man, his son will die. Like I said, motivation is an understatement.

To assist with this assignment, Sam is provided with a hacker, Leonie, whose young daughter, Taylor, has also been abducted. Together, they set out to hunt down the man who stands between them and their children. Emotionally conflicted, the pair struggles to come to terms with killing an innocent man, but they decide that they will do anything to bring their children to safety.

Adding further conflict is Mila, Sam's boss with "The Round Table", a resistance group that he joined after his departure from the CIA. Mila wants to help Sam to find his son, but Sam has been given specific instructions that state only he and Leonie can pursue the evidence. When another force, which is searching for the mysterious Mila (she has a 1 million dollar price for her capture), begins to interfere with Sam's investigation, he is forced also try to protect her.

Being Abbott's second novel to feature Sam Capra, "The Last Minute" begins by picking up in the middle of action. While readers of the previous installment were probably ready for the action that begins in this one, I found it a bit slow to start.

Sam Capra, former CIA and hero of "Adrenaline", again fights off international criminals and tries to save the life of his new-born child while his ex-wife lies in a coma. The book is fast-paced, full of thrills-a-minute while Sam fights off criminal factions from all sides, including his former friends from the CIA. Mila, his mentor from "Adrenaline", is also back and this time she reveals how she became the woman who will go up against anything and anyone. Her part of the story is mesmerizing to say the least and reveals another chapter in the Sam Capra series. Sam is forced to team up with another woman who also had her child taken from her by the mysterious criminal factions that seem to multiply, not knowing which side is the right side, and their hopeless job is to find and kill an innocent man if they want their children back. Fortunately, Sam is an expert in parkour, jumping and running off buildings and roofs which help him in fighting the odds. It looks like there will be another Sam Capra book in the future. If you like an exciting book, hard to put down, this is it.

I rated it 3 stars for a reason.
I won't rehash the summary/plot...others have done that.

I love Jeff Abbott.
And this book is full of action and adventure - which I thoroughly enjoy.
The action gets a 4 1/2.

But from an audiobook standpoint, I got so sick and tired of hearing - "I just want my child/son"...became quite annoying.
If I had read it, instead of listened to it, I could have skimmed over that and it may not have bothered me.

I don't like how he left the ending with Leone...blah...pathetic - other reviewers disagree with me on that.

If you read, skim over the whining, if you listen, it will annoy you.
Overall I recommend this book and this author.

Now that he has his son, hopefully, the son will not be dragged in to further books.

Amateurish writing. Ridiculous situation resolutions. I'm done with Abbott. Too many other good books out there to waste time on this.

Found out about this author through a mailing. As a result of reading the first book "Adrenaline" had to find out more about the character Sam Capra. Highly intense thriller.

Although much of this story would never ring true if you held a bell next to it, it matters not. The author has created a good thriller, and if you can suspend belief, then you are in for a good read. One thing that staggers the imagination throughout is that our hero,Sam Capra, a veteran CIA agent, would ever think that it would be so simple as "kill this guy, get your baby back." Since that is the premise for the whole novel, swallow that and you will be fine. I did! And I had several hours of good reading. Now I might even read Adrenaline.

The first Sam Capra book, "Adrenaline," left on a bit of a cliff-hanger, and this sequel doesn't disappoint by picking it up pretty much where it left off (the mini-book "Sam Capra's Last Chance" actually picks up precisely where the first book leaves off, but that mini-book is really a preview (about 20-30 pages worth), and it is not needed in order to completely enjoy "The Last Stand"). The plot here is relatively straightforward, and Abbott drives it forward continuously. It is longer than Adrenaline, but it reads just about as quickly. If you liked Adrenaline, it is hard to imagine that you won't like this one almost as much. I know I did, and I am looking forward to more Sam Capra tales.
