Relatable, but sad...,

It's not that Sir Elton John can't perform a bad song--he can, 'cause I don't like all of his works--but he rarely has a dud. This one is no different. While to implicit in the song itself, it was written and used for AIDS research foundation fundraising and was played during a montage of people who died from AIDS when it was first released - at least, I think it was when it was first released. Anyway, the story tells of a father and a son who have not connected well with each other. It hints that one of them is sick and dying (and it appears to be the son), and that the father and son reconcile in the end before he dies. While it is implied that he is dying from AIDS, and it's been used for AIDS fundraising, the song itself makes no mention of illness directly or of AIDS or of the reason the father and son are so disparate.
it's a powerful song. Very moving. Anyone who has ever sought love and affection from a parent will relate with this song, regardless of the reasons for their emotional separation. Very emotional, and beautifully orchestrated.

This song seems like it was written for me. Like in the song My Father came to see me at the lowest point in my life and I really did misjudge the love between a Father and his son. My Father passed away and I'm 42 years old now and every time I hear this song I can feel the tears welling up in my eyes.
Elton John puts alot of heart and soul in the songs he creates and nearly every one in my opinion is a classic, this one included. |
