Book Description

Amazon Best Seller - Literary Fiction -  Gold Medal Recipient-2013 Independent Publisher Books Award- Religious Fiction; Silver Medal Recipient - 2013 Readers' Favorite - Women's Fiction The Last Supper Catering Company is the heartwarming story of  B. Thankful Childe-Lucknow. Turned out with red corkscrew hair, one eye brown, the other green, and gifted with the power to hear the voices of the departed, B. Thankful is cast aside by the town, and lives an isolated upbringing in the woods with Big G, Little G, and Tyler Lucknow.

Tragedy, followed by the discovery of a long-forgotten paint-by-number picture of the Last Supper, thrusts B. Thankful from the safety of everything she has ever known.

Beyond the boundary of her sheltered life, B. Thankful discovers the world's hard edges as well as its beauty.  More importantly, with the help of a cast of quirky and tenderhearted souls (both earthly and heavenly), she discovers why God made her special.

"It is difficult to believe this is Michaelene McElroy's debut novel. Her talent outshines some of the most experienced authors of her time...  ...I have nothing to compare the plot to; it is unique, imaginative and wonderfully developed." - Anne Boling for Readers' Favorite

"The Last Supper Catering Company is beautifully crafted, a throwback to a style half-forgotten yet sorely missed." - Nick Bantock, Author/Artist - Griffin and Sabine Trilogy

"My momma died on a hot August afternoon in 1950, right before I was born."

One of the best opening lines to a novel I have ever read. Michaelene McElroy delivers big emotions and tiny treasures in her crisp and languid telling of a young woman's journey of discovery and deep abiding care for the strangers she meets along the way...With tones of "To Kill a Mockingbird" and "Forrest Gump", this novel tenderly declares its own delicious literary voice of innocence and courage, with rich, full characters and marvelous sightings of what the world could be. Its words and its heart will fill you like a warm strawberry rhubarb crumble on a late summer day...Life's too short not to meet Miss B. Thankful.  A literary gem that begs to be savoured. - Tess Wixted, Associate Editor, Life As A Human

From the Author

As the story for The Last Supper Catering Company unfolded, it spoke to my own experience with the power of food shared with love, the communion that takes place between the giver and receiver, and the eternal bond that remains after the giver has departed from this world to the next; the meal that sings Remember me, for I will remember you. Writing The Last Supper Catering Company allowed me to reexamine the world through the innocent, non-judgmental, and forgiving, eyes of B. Thankful Childe-Lucknow.  She is the embodiment of all I long to be, all that I long the world to be.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Last Supper Catering Company July 28, 2012
By Breeze
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
What seems to be a fun little story is actually a curiously emotional ride with B. Thankful Childe-Lucknow as our guide. This journey will take you to many places. You will find that courage, hope, forgiveness, understanding, death and love is quite possible even in the most unusual circumstances. This book will also take you through many phases of life and death and cause you to think more about situations in your life that have ever caused a smile or a tear. I loved it!

As I giggled, smiled, cried and hissed through this book I found so many new friends that I am holding close. They have become alive and I want to share this book with everyone. Michaelene McElroy has written a tender story with just the right amount of humor and love to keep you guessing... "what could possibly happen next!"... Travel On B. Thankful! Cannot wait to meet more of your delightful friends. The Last Supper Catering Company

5.0 out of 5 stars An amazing read August 11, 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
In her debut novel the author invites you on a journey with B.Thankful, a young, naive but life-wise girl who is on a mission. The author takes the reader on a ride through just about every emotion possible. Narrated by B.Thankful, you find yourself experiencing B.Thankful's pain, her joy, her longings. The author's style is amazing - it is a comfortable style that draws you in and then doesn't let you go. I was transported into areas of emotion that I have rarely experienced with current authors. I cried as Bobbie Lee passed but then laughed out loud as B.Thankful relates, as only B.Thankful can, the lyrics of the song his mates sing for him. The multiple layers of this novel are incredible and hard to describe in words. All I can say is that I highly recommend this book to those who wish to do more than just "read". If you want to "experience" a depth and range of emotions this book will not disappoint. Bravo to the author! And I can't wait for the next installment of B.Thankful!

5.0 out of 5 stars A literary gem that begs to be savoured September 1, 2012

"My momma died on a hot August afternoon in 1950, right before I was born."

One of the best opening lines to a novel I have ever read. Michaelene McElroy delivers big emotions and tiny treasures in her crisp and languid telling of a young woman's journey of discovery and deep abiding care for the strangers she meets along the way. It's a sojourn through the 1960's of the United States with its racial tensions, the tears in its cultural fabric and a light-hearted view of everything from grocery stores and TV shows to pickled pigs feet and sensual chocolate adventures. With tones of "To Kill a Mockingbird" and "Forrest Gump", this novel tenderly declares its own delicious literary voice of innocence and courage, with rich, full characters and marvelous sightings of what the world could be. Its words and its heart will fill you like a warm strawberry rhubarb crumble on a late summer day.

I laughed. I cried. I didn't want "The Last Supper Catering Company" to end. And for me it never will.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Last Supper Catering Company February 28, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The subject of death has never been so sweetly written about. The characters are as quirky as their names. This is a "feel good" book that is all about childlike faith, being kind, and letting God use you to help others. Even when He asks you to do what you think is impossible or beyond your abilities, He "upholds you with His right hand". B. Thankful steps outside her comfort zone and brings love to final moments. This is a heartwarming , hopeful and uplifting book. I look forward to more from this author.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book will grab you and not let go... October 8, 2012
Format:Paperback
It's been a while since I've picked up a book that will truly make your heart sing and take you down memory lane. This book might spark memories that are different from mine, but this is the kind of book that can pull together a group of people and hand them a sense of commonality. There are places in the book that will tug on your heart strings and bring forth tears of joy and sadness, but most of all love.

Written in an honest, caring, and down-to-earth voice, it's hard not to fall in love with B. Thankful Childe. It's hard not to think that you are right there with her, sharing her experiences, dissolving with her during her pain, and basking in her joy and love. Don't fight it. Just sit back and immerse yourself into one of the greatest stories ever told. You'll want to keep it handy on your bookshelf so that you can read it time-and-time again, or pass it on so that others can get lost the same way you did, only to find that you never really left and what matters most is what is in your heart. This book gives you that reminder.

5.0 out of 5 stars I GOT THE CHILLS ON PAGE 1!!! September 8, 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I got the CHILLS on page one!!

This book had me hooked at the first page - and that's only the beginning of an extraordinary story! It cleverly sucks you into B. Thankful's 1960s world which is so different and naive -- and yet worldly. A whole range of emotions is right up-front -- and so is B. Thankful's paint-by-number Jesus at the Last Supper!

This book is filled with happiness, sadness, acts of kindness, compassion and humor - lots of it!

And it brings on the tears -- keep the tissue closeby!

I loved the witty names the author has chosen to share in B. Thankful Childe-Lucknow's journey -- Big G, Little G, Pride and Harmonia Pennywhistle - all of whom give their own wisdom and love.

Big G, and especially spunky Little G teach B. Thankful all of their bits of country wisdom, compassion and kindness -- with a shotgun, if necessary!

Integrating recipes and cooking was another joy I found in this book. (My mouth was watering as I was "cooking" that roasted garlic chicken with B. Thankful!) The author cleverly "combines" nuances - which are "gently stirred" with cups of kindness for some bold strangers that B. Thankful meets, loves and always "remembers". It's all "whipped" up with humor!

I didn't want this delightful book to end! Now that I've finished it, I'm disappointed that I don't have B. Thankful to read about at the end of my day. Hopefully B. Thankful will return again soon with more love, remembrance and last suppers.

P.S. Where can I find a chocolate Banner Bar???
