I bought this as a Kickstarter. Per my request, I received the digital edition, not this paperback, so I can't review the printing or binding quality or anything like that. Also, I'm going to stay away from plot summary, because other reviewers have already done that, and because the exposition is just such a delight that I'd hate to rob you all of the chance to discover it yourselves!

The story grabbed me from the very first page, and I read the entire volume in a single sitting. Very thought-provoking. The alternate present-day that it depicts is extraordinarily creepy, inasmuch as one could frequently mistake it for our own - yet everything is different. It isn't just a conceit that's explained once and then forgotten; rather, there are subtle cues everywhere. None of the characters ever explicitly mention the ever-worsening situation their world is in, and daily life goes on unchanged. Which is the problem.

Some will probably jump to the conclusion that these creators intend to evoke Ayn Rand, inasmuch as The Last West deals with the subject of where creative works and a culture's sense of "drive" come from. However, the comic actually has its own, quite unusual take on that - fundamentally a lighthearted fantasy answer, but with its consequences depicted vividly. Plausibility does not come into play, because this is explicitly a story about the (very subtle!) supernatural. Or is it...?

At any rate. Fantastically tight plot structure. Compelling dialogue. Striking use of color and high levels of detail in the visuals. Buy it.

The Last West draws from many inspirations throughout literature and science fiction as well as comic books of days gone by. The alternate history take on a divergent timeline is reminiscent of Phillip K. Dick's work.

The story focuses on a family, The Wests, who are responsible for all technological and sociological advancement for humanity. At the site of the atomic bomb test a West isn't where he's supposed to be, and the test fails. All advancements freeze. Fast forward to modern day and the world has made only marginal improvements in term of technology.

One man figures out that the West family is tied to the stagnation of society, and has his own reasons for and ways of finding the last remaining member of the family - the titular last West.

There's action, drama, humor, and cameos from famous historic faces that are inspired to produce trademark works of art or accomplishments simply by being in the presence of a West (not pointless filler pages as another review mentioned; rather an example of their influence intentional or otherwise).

Evan and Lou have told a magnificent first half of the story with this volume, and I'm very much looking forward to Volume 2 in 2015.

This is an amazing alternate history story. I purchased the printed version and it is a well produced, well written, and well drawn book. I highly recommend you pick it up!

One of the best alternate history graphic novels/stories in recent memory. It is the first half of a 2 volume series consisting of five issues of a digital comic book (Volume 2 just finished a highly successful Kickstarter and will be out in early/mid 2015). The story is filled with historical references and the book includes appendixes pointing these out in case you missed them. There is science, spy, intrigue, family conflict and more. The art and writing are amazing. Even if you are not a graphic novel fan, you should read this book.
