Editorial Reviews

Review

"Beautiful, fresh reflections on Jesus' dying words in the spirit of Francis of Assisi. The insights lead straight into ways of discipleship, empowering love of God and our neighbor in this contemporary world." --Elizabeth Johnson, C.S.J., Fordham University

"Written in a wonderfully engaging style, The Last Words of Jesus explores the intrinsic connection between love and suffering; on the cross, Jesus' suffering is but the consequence of His extravagant love." --Roberto S. Goizueta, Boston College.

"Daniel Horan's passion to follow the advice of St. Francis of Assisi - 'Preach the gospel at all times; when necessary use words' - comes through clearly in these wise reflections at the foot of the cross. Highly recommended as a resource for all who hunger for words of hope in the face of suffering." --Mary Catherine Hilkert, O.P., University of Notre Dame.

"Jesus’s and Francis’s starting point was not sin, but suffering—the suffering of the world and even the suffering of God. This creates a very different perspective on the Christian gospel, and I think you will find it here! In this book, Dan Horan makes the sublime simple and beautiful, which is surely the Franciscan way.”—Richard Rohr, O.F.M., founder, Center for Action and Contemplation

"This beautiful new book by one of my favorite young spiritual writers offers an invitation to meditate on God’s great love for us, on Christ’s sacrifice and on the human condition. Dan Horan’s insights are for anyone who has ever grieved, lost or sought hope. In other words, it is a book for everyone."—James Martin, S.J., author, The Jesuit Guide to (Almost) Everything

"The lifeblood of these deeply Franciscan meditations is the memory of a God who is 'head over heels in love with humanity,' and who identifies radically with suffering creation. Dan Horan writes with the steady hand of a scholar and the trembling heart of a follower of Jesus. I will never again hear Jesus’s words 'I thirst' without also hearing the cries of those hidden millions today dying from lack of water. Dan helps us wrestle, as every new generation must, with the terrible beauty and scandal of the cross."—Chris Pramuk, associate professor of theology, Xavier University

The Last Words of Jesus is a compelling look at a horrific moment in history and one that is central to the establishment of Christianity. ...Horan writes in a warm, reader-friendly style that combines the personal and the personable." — National Catholic Reporter

The back cover of the book showcases Rohr’s description of the book as “simple and beautiful.” This captures perfectly the meditation that Horan offers here. His lucid and vivid prose presents readers with the challenge of Christian life: to live a life of love that demands courageous action and vulnerability.

The book is a contribution to the Good Friday practice of preaching on the seven last words of Jesus, but the reflections here get at the heart of all Christian life, making it a relevant and challenging read for any time during the liturgical year. I’ll be revisiting it during and beyond the Lenten season.

Although I read the text individually, at many times while reading I was eager to discuss the content with others. It think this would be a great text to read with a friend or small group.

In his latest book, Daniel P. Horan, O.F.M., shares his reflections on the last words of Jesus in terms of what they might mean to us today, highlighting ways in which Christian discipleship depends on sharing in the passion of Christ. Two major themes are the reconciliation of love and suffering and understanding the place of these two elements in our lives.

Horan presents the seven sayings in separate chapters, each consisting of four segments: (1) an extended passage from scripture (2) refection on how the saying might speak to today's Christians, (3) reflection questions, and (4) an original prayer.

The reflections all connect Christ's Last Words with Catholic social teaching and the Franciscan view of the Passion of Jesus (for example, loving and suffering are two sides of the same coin, and the Cross is entwined with the Incarnation).

The book grew out of an invitation Horan received to be the 2011 preacher for a Good Friday talk at a large Manhattan parish. The topic was the Seven Last Words of Christ. While the young priest was aware of the traditional service, he had never witnessed it himself, so he considered carefully before agreeing. Once he signed on he embraced reflection on the seven last words as his Lenten practice, allowing them to permeate all his activities. Through that experience and further research, Horan concluded that the words of Jesus as he parted this life "should be the founding words of my life."

Daniel P. Horan, O.F.M., entered the Order of Friars Minor in 2005, professed vows in 2007, and was ordained a priest in 2012. He has written numerous articles and several books including Dating God: Live and Love in the Way of St. Francis.

One of the most moving and insightful books it have ever used for Lent. I began and completed the last word from the Cross. This morning I was drawn to the reflections linking the beginning of Luke's Gospel to the SEVEN LATST WORDS. Deeply insightful. For the remainder of Holy Week, I plan to return to each word from the Cross and reflect on the Passion ...the coin with love and suffering as the two sides. I shall always remember this image!

This is truly a powerful testatment and thought provoking. . It is an awesome and superbly written. It brings Jesus' life and purpose to the heart of whoever reads this. I would have loved beyond measure to have attended this conference that was closed to the friars of St. Francis. Fr. Daniel Horan has written a book I will keep by my side until the day I die. He brought Jesus' purpose back to life in today's world.

I heard Fr. Dan Horan speak at a benefit dinner for Franciscan
Mission service and loved his talk. That evening I googled him and found this appropriate book for the last week of lent. I was not disappointed. The words especially in the main chapters were poignant and reflective with a social justice and Franciscan bend. Thank you Fr. Dan for this
Holy Week reflection.
