Review

PRAISE FOR THE LATE LORD BYRON

“A massive triumph of literary scholarship . . . with awesome industry
and remorseless detail. . . . She has checked dates, exposed lies and exaggerations, analyzed characters and speculated about motives.”
   —The New York Times

“A volume filled with drama and wit, perceptive and penetrating character analysis, as well as acute literary detection.”
—Robert R. Kirsch, Los Angeles Times

When I ordered this book, I wasn't sure what to expect from a biography that begins at Byron's death and is focused on the aftermath of his life. However, I was extremely delighted to find that Moore's work gave incredible and unbelievable insight into Byron's life via the legacy that this poet left behind.

Instead of the subject being the main character, as in the standard biography, in "The Late Lord Byron," Byron takes a back seat. This gives his closest friends and relatives, namely, Cam Hobhouse and Augusta Leigh, the spotlight. Through the voices and actions of Byron's closest friends and sister, one can truly gain wonderful insight into Byron's character, as these people react to the poet's death and legacy.

Furthermore, Moore writes in a relatively unbiased manner, thoroughly and comprehensively exploring the motives--psychological, social, ideological, political, etc.--of many of the "characters," including Lady Byron, which I found to be quite enlightening.

Overall, I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in Lord Byron, the British Romantic Era, or literary biography in general. This work is extremely well researched and presented.

Maybe it's the most wonderful and definitive book on Byron?!? I wouldn't know because the print is so small AND single-spaced that these old eyes cannot deal. I'll donate it to our library and recommend it for the teen room.
