Editorial Reviews

Review

A very condensed, instructive, refreshing book. It will open up new trains of thought to those unversed in the teaching of the types. --(Charles H. Spurgeon 2001-01-01)

From the Back Cover

A classic work on the Old Testament offerings and their significance for the New Testament believer! Andrew Jukes explores the offerings of Leviticus as types of Christ’s work in providing for the believer’s access to and fellowship with God. As Jukes observes, “Leviticus begins after redemption is known, and speaks of things connected with the access of a chosen people to God. . . . Christ in his work is the sum and substance of these types.”

“A classic on the typological significance of the offerings mentioned in Leviticus, showing how each clearly points toward some particular aspect of the redemptive work of Christ.”

—David W. Brookman
Author, Basic Books for the Minister’s Library

“No one explains the significance of the Levitical offerings (in relation to Calvary) as well as Jukes does here. . . . It bursts into life with several superb chapters which are practically essential to the study of Leviticus.”

—Peter M. Masters
Pastor, Metropolitan Tabernacle (Spurgeon’s)

“A very condensed, instructive, refreshing book. It will open up new trains of thought to those unversed in the teaching of the types.”

—Charles H. Spurgeon

Andrew Jukes (1815–1901) was educated at Harrow and Trinity College, Cambridge, England. He was appointed deacon and was licensed to the curacy of St. John’s Church, Hull. Jukes’ writing also includes The Names of God in Holy Scripture.

Only in Jukes work have I found such a thorough-going explanation of the typical fulfillment of the Law of God concerning the Levitical offerings by the voluntary sacrifice of Christ's own life on Calvary in the sinner's place. Jukes alone unfolds the actual relationship of the true child of God to his heavenly Father because of Christ's having stood literally AS the sinner himself and having stood the judgment of God FOR each and every sinner who has ever lived (all mankind). In so doing, Jukes explains in detail HOW and WHY the child of God can fully account himself as not only ACCEPTED FOREVER with God, but much more importantly, AS STANDING IN PERFECT FELLOWSHIP AND COMMUNION with him now and forever, never able to change that standing (because Christ's offering AS and FOR the sinner was an infinitely perfect sacrifice, pure and without spot or blemish, offered ONCE for all time and eternity). Further he explains why more Christians don't enter into that perfect relationship, because of their failure to apprehend all that God has ALREADY done for them in Christ's offering of himself on the altar as OFFEROR, OFFERING and PRIEST, in perfect accord with every minute requirement of God's Law concerning each one of the offerings (Burnt, Meat, Peace, Sin, Trespass and Whole Offering). A Masterful work which will stand until Christ's appearing as the guidepost to true Christian service!

I'm reading this book for the second time and find it just as valuable as the first. It opens the ancient tabernacle/temple sacrifices to greater savior-based understanding, and there is much here to prompt reflection, meditation and deeper discipleship. I note one reviewer gave it low marks for, I believe, its writing style. To pass on this book for any perceived writing style weakness would be like failing to plumb the depths of the Levitical sacrifices for their illumination of Christ.

If you are a King James reader it might go well with you , I however am not . Although it is not quite that antiquated it is certainly English that does not flow when read.
