If you are thinking of getting a gun for self defense, or already own one, you owe it to yourself to get this book and read it, twice.

Branca sets forth five principles of which every gun owner should be aware if faced with the need to use a weapon in self-defense.

I read this book because I thought I needed to understand the law when it came to defending my family (I just had a kid and I think I was having a rash of protective feelings).

I got so much more.

It steps you through not just how each state will view any defensive act you might take, but clearly lays out why it will do that. It's comprehensive - giving you all the information you need about all 50 states -- but it's all done in tables so you don't have to weed through all the other states to find your information.

It also doesn't just leave you in the quagmire of legal ups-and-downs. It clearly lays out what you can do to protect yourself in a framework that's both practical and easy to follow.

Everyone who is interested in protecting themselves and their families (and let's face it, that's all of us) should read this book.

An updated version of his first work of the same title, Mr. Branca has made this subject matter and the laws around it much more approachable for non-attorneys this time around. In the single most comprehensive work on this subject that I am aware of, Mr. Branca has used his legal training to painstakingly research the current laws of self-defense in each individual state. What's more, he has thoroughly researched the legal concepts surrounding the issue of self-defense as well. He has then crafted this research into usable, understandable information that one does not need a law degree to comprehend.

In short, he has taken a complex legal issue and made it approachable to anyone who is interested in the subject. I highly recommend this book.

I have carried for > 20 years in a multitude of states. The laws are so different state to state that it is confusing to know them all.

What does not change is that if you need to already have been doing everything correctly that was under your control. After using deadly force you need an attorney that knows what is in Attorney Branca's book. Use this book and review it with your lawyer to know if they are the right lawyer for you. This book will help you and your attorney come to a better understanding of what is expected of you being a potential client/defendant and them being your savior.

Buy this book! The rest of your liberty may depend on it.

There are a lot of bad notions about self-defense and carrying. This sheds the light of what the facts are, and is a must read for pretty much everyone in the US. The book and the time spent reading it is far, far, cheaper than the cost of a defense attorney if someone makes a dumb mistake.

First off, I want to say I am not a gun owner. I have no issue with guns, but in the Peoples Republic of New Jersey it is difficult at best to get a defense weapon, and virtually impossible to get a carry permit.

Having said that, you would think that a book subtitled "The indispensable guide for the armed citizen" wouldn't have much relevance to non gun owners. You would be wrong.

Branca takes you on a journey through not only the laws of all self defense, but the theories and justifications of those acts. That is not an easy thing to do, and to do it in a concise yet still entertaining and readable format is almost impossible, yet he pulls it off.

This book takes a complex subject and makes it an easy read. I highly recommend it. In no way does Branca glorify killing, or any use of force, He explains the relevant principles that everyone should know and understand before ever raising your hands or a weapon in defense of self. I have trained in Martial Arts for well over a decade and after reading Branca's book I feel far more prepared and confident in self defense than I ever have - Not because it gave me any extra skills or tactics, but because it gave me the understanding of what I should think about before, and will happen afterwards, should I ever have to defend myself. That is something no martial arts or self defense class has ever done. I will be recommending his book to everyone at my Dojo. It should be required reading for every belt level test!

I know if I ever had to defend myself, I would hire Branca as my lawyer, no matter what he charged me!

This book covers what a jury, prosecuter, judge, police, ect. will do after a shooting. It talks about what is considered self defense in what states. It compares the "stand your ground" laws with the "duty to retreat" laws, and tells which state has which.
I also found some good advice for when you are thinking about carrying a gun in public. he writes...
"there are a few people who imagine that having a gun means you no longer have to take guff from anybody. In fact having a gun means you have to take guff from everybody."

I didn't realize all that was involved with the idea of self defense and the consequences of defending yourself. I feel better prepared for the the idea of self defense, but this book is terrifying in the reality of what you will probably go through if you do have to defend yourself.

The numerous charts are probably obsolete even before the book left the publisher, so readers probably would have been better served by links to a website. With that said, there are links to a website in the book.
