An updated version of his first work of the same title, Mr. Branca has made this subject matter and the laws around it much more approachable for non-attorneys this time around. In the single most comprehensive work on this subject that I am aware of, Mr. Branca has used his legal training to painstakingly research the current laws of self-defense in each individual state. What's more, he has thoroughly researched the legal concepts surrounding the issue of self-defense as well. He has then crafted this research into usable, understandable information that one does not need a law degree to comprehend.

In short, he has taken a complex legal issue and made it approachable to anyone who is interested in the subject. I highly recommend this book.

I read this book because I thought I needed to understand the law when it came to defending my family (I just had a kid and I think I was having a rash of protective feelings).

I got so much more.

It steps you through not just how each state will view any defensive act you might take, but clearly lays out why it will do that. It's comprehensive - giving you all the information you need about all 50 states -- but it's all done in tables so you don't have to weed through all the other states to find your information.

It also doesn't just leave you in the quagmire of legal ups-and-downs. It clearly lays out what you can do to protect yourself in a framework that's both practical and easy to follow.

Everyone who is interested in protecting themselves and their families (and let's face it, that's all of us) should read this book.

I have carried for > 20 years in a multitude of states. The laws are so different state to state that it is confusing to know them all.

What does not change is that if you need to already have been doing everything correctly that was under your control. After using deadly force you need an attorney that knows what is in Attorney Branca's book. Use this book and review it with your lawyer to know if they are the right lawyer for you. This book will help you and your attorney come to a better understanding of what is expected of you being a potential client/defendant and them being your savior.

Buy this book! The rest of your liberty may depend on it.

This book covers what a jury, prosecuter, judge, police, ect. will do after a shooting. It talks about what is considered self defense in what states. It compares the "stand your ground" laws with the "duty to retreat" laws, and tells which state has which.
I also found some good advice for when you are thinking about carrying a gun in public. he writes...
"there are a few people who imagine that having a gun means you no longer have to take guff from anybody. In fact having a gun means you have to take guff from everybody."

If you think you know enough about the consequences of using a firearm to defend yourself, think again. Better yet, buy this book (which is now cheaper than a box of premium ammo but just as important). The truth of the matter is that while you think the law is on your side, it's a crap shoot, especially since there aren't enough legitimate self-defense cases out there in a given locality to provide enough work for attorney's to build a practice on and thus, they are woefully unprepared to save you from the crushing gears of justice which will look at you, not knowing if you're the good guy or the bad guy, all they'll have is the evidence, not what you say but the evidence, because any warm body can say "I'm innocent" in fact they hear it all the time. Many people get off easy because the police rely on hunches, which they relay to the prosecutor, but do you want to bet your life on a hunch? On anyone's instinct? Especially someone who doesn't know you from Adam? Andrew Branca takes his readers through many different scenarios based on his experience going through cases from across the country, throughout decades, he knows case law, not just the barebones legislation that doesn't tell the whole story. So if you find yourself in that position that no lawful gun owner wants to find themselves in, where they actually are forced to pull the trigger to save their life of that of someone they love, you will have a resource to educate your attorney to give you the best defense possible, based on objective, unflinching principles of law, not instincts or the emotional ammunition that a prosecutor will try to use to sway a jury. You arm yourself to be ready for any attacker, arm yourself to be ready for the one that's inevitable to follow.

There are many books like this out there that cover the basics of self defense law. I have several in the hope of learning something new. If I had to have only one, I'd get Masada Ayoobs "In The Gravest Extreme" but Ayoobs book is dated and very hard to get. This book is very current and covers the laws on many states.

One commenter here writes that this book teaches someone how to get away with murder. I disagree, if you own a firearm, you have a personal responsibility to know the contours of the law so you stay within the law and the law does not allow murder. So, reading this book will make you a better citizen. It'll prepare you to act only when you absolutely have absolutely no other recourse and to not act when there are options out there or when you could be putting yourself in jeopardy.

Do you need 5 books like this? No. One will likely serve you well but I personally am always looking to refine my understanding.

I will say this book, and no book, is a substitute for a good lawyer but a bit of reading and prudence on your part could make your lawyers job much easier and better yet it also help prevent you from getting involved in an unnecessary tragedy by having you not overreact in situations that don't justify the use of a firearm under the law.
